New faces in fall election

The Nov. 3 elections for Village Council and school board livened up at the last minute last week, when several new hopefuls entered the races shortly before the deadline.
Five villagers are running for three open seats on Village Council, and seven people are running for three open seats on school board, according to the Greene County Board of Elections, which officially certified the candidates at its board meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 25. The deadline for filing petitions was Thursday, Aug. 20.
Rick Walkey and Gerry Bello have entered the race for Village Council, joining incumbents Judith Hempfling, Karen Wintrow and Kathryn Van der Heiden, who are all running again for office. The winners of the Nov. 3 election will join current Council members Lori Askeland and John Booth, who have two years left of their four-year terms.
The two top winners will receive four-year terms, and the third winner will begin a two-year term. Currently, Hempfling, who is president of Council, and Wintrow, who is vice-president, are finishing up their first four-year terms, having been the top vote-getters in the 2005 election. Van der Heiden is finishing up her first two-year term.
John Hempfling, Benji Maruyama, Deirdre Owen and David Turner have filed to run for the Yellow Springs Board of Education, along with incumbents Aïda Merhemic and Anne Erickson, who are finishing up their first terms, and Angela Wright, who is finishing up her fourth term on the board. All school board members are elected for four years. The winners on Nov. 3 will join current members Richard Lapedes and Sean Creighton, who have two years left in their terms.
Incumbents Lamar Spracklen and Mark Crockett and newcomer John Struewing are running for the two seats open on the Miami Township Board of Trustees. The two winners will join current trustee Chris Mucher, who has two years left of his second four-year term.
Nine-term mayor Dave Foubert hasn’t had enough of that office yet, and will run for his 10th two-year term on Nov. 3. He is the only candidate for that position.
