Miller advances to regionals

On a dreary day at the Div. III District cross country meet at Englewood’s Miami Valley Tech Center on Saturday, Oct. 24, YSHS ninth grader Lois Miller emerged eighth out of 140 runners in 20:20. That time advanced her to the Southwest Regional meet at Troy High School on Saturday, Oct. 31. Her race begins at 11 a.m.

The rest of the Bulldog harriers weren’t so lucky, and the girls team finished 12th at the district championships. Reini Brickson was 49th, with Hannah Kumbusky 93rd, Mary Triplett 135th and Kelly Miller was 138th for the Bulldogs.

McHugh leads boys harriers

On the men’s side, Zach McHugh led the men’s pack of Bulldogs to a ninth-place finish. McHugh was 35th overall in 19:05. Gabe Amrhein finished 40th, Josh Meadows 45th, Nathaniel Reed 49th and Birch Robinson-Hubbuch 52nd as the Bulldog scorers.

Boys soccer sectional champs

The YSHS boys soccer team won its first three Div. III tournament games last week to advance to the District semifinals, which will take place on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 5 p.m., at Winton Woods High School. The boys play the winner of Cincinnati Seven Hills/Madeira contest.

In the sectional finals match against Greeneview on Tuesday, Oct. 25, the Bulldogs went up in the first half on a goal by Chris Johnson. The team then scored three more in the second by Mario Cosey, Alexis Onfroy and Jake Trumbull, before the Rams had a chance to contest the 4–1 slaughter.

In the previous sectional match, Yellow Springs topped Tri-County North 6–1 on Tuesday, Oct. 20, on goals by Onfroy, AJ Wagner, Trumbull (2), Johnson and Will Turner.

The Bulldogs ended the season with a victory against the Stivers Tigers with the same score, 6–1. Scoring in that contest were Onfroy (2), Logan Norris-Sayres, Trumbull, Cosey and Johnson.

Football team loses to Jefferson

The YSHS football team neared the end of its season with a loss to Jefferson 42–8 on Friday, Oct. 23.

Winning season for JV volleyball

The YSHS junior varsity volleyball team finished the season with a 9–7 record, beating Xenia Christian and Troy Christian in the final week of play.

Against Xenia Christian on Tuesday, Oct. 20, Yellow Springs won 25–20, 20–25, 25–15. Emma Peifer led the team with 15 points and six kills. On Thursday, Oct. 22, Yellow Springs beat Troy Christian, 22–25, 25–23, 25–23. Adrianne Beer led with 13 points, a kill and six assists.

Youth ball sign-up

All fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade girls and boys who are interested in playing on the Yellow Springs (traveling) youth basketball team need to attend the sign up meeting on Friday, Oct. 30, at 6:30 p.m. at the Mills Lawn gymnasium. Practices will start soon, and games are scheduled to begin in January 2010. For more information, contact Valerie Scarfpin at 767-1321.

Basketball for kids

The Crickets basketball program for girls and boys in first to third grade starts Friday, Nov. 6. Six Friday sessions will be held at 6–7 p.m. in the Bryan Center gym, ending Dec. 18. The sessions focus on fundamentals and consist of mostly drills with some informal scrimmage games. Interested players can register at the beginning of the first session they attend. Players are encouraged to attend as many sessions as possible. Registration is free but donations are accepted. T-shirts will be available for purchase. Soccer, Inc. potluck celebrates 45 years

Yellow Springs Soccer Inc. (YSSI) will celebrate 45 years of recreational soccer and honor Joe Robinson, the founder of the YS Recreational Soccer League, with a community potluck on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Mills Lawn School auditorium. Interested individuals and families are encouraged to keep this date available and participate in the festivities.

Former and current recreational soccer coaches and referees are encouraged to attend this community potluck and be recognized for their contribution to the success of this soccer program. Current and former soccer players, families and community members are encouraged to come to appreciate the others. Please bring a dish to share plus your own table service.

To help with this event, contact Lauren Miller at 767-2072. Assistance in the set-up and clean-up for this event would be greatly appreciated. Community service hours will be granted to students who help. Please join in the celebration of one of Yellow Springs’ most enjoyed activities — soccer.
