Boys basketball improves to 9–1
The YSHS boys basketball team tucked another win under its belt last week, overwhelming Miami Valley 62–32 on Friday, Jan. 22. The league win put the Bulldogs up 9–1 for the season and 6–0 in the Metro Buckeye Conference, where they currently stand in first place, one game ahead of Emmanuel Academy.
Senior Ian Wimberly led the Bulldogs with a career-high 16 points, 10 assists and five steals. Senior Will Ripley added 15 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Kody McDonald contributed a season high of seven steals, four points and three assists.
Girls basketball hits losing streak
After defeating Emmanuel Academy 50–58 earlier in the month, the YSHS girls basketball team took to the road and began a tough losing streak, with two key players falling to injury. The team lost 53–16 to Cedarville on Jan. 16, and took a hard 60–38 loss against Stivers on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Yellow Springs then suffered a 58–32 beating by Miami Valley on Friday, Jan. 22.
Against Cedarville, Yellow Springs was up 24–22 at the half time, behind the scoring of Maryah Martin and Stephanie Scott. But Cedarville outscored Yellow Springs 19 to five in the third, and the Lady Bulldogs could not close the gap. Martin finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Amber Dudgeon scored 10 points, and Scott had nine rebounds.
Against Stivers, Scott led with 10 points but left the game injured. And the skid continued at Miami Valley, who jumped out to a seven-point lead before the Lady Bulldogs scored on a free throw, which comprised all of Yellow Springs’ points in the first half. Martin led the team with 10 points, five assists, and Alex Beer added nine. Roniqua Cobb also left that game injured.
Swimmers at Shawnee meet
The YSHS swim team competed against 10 schools at the Shawnee meet at Wittenberg on Sunday, Jan. 24. The girls team came in sixth, behind Springfield Shawnee and Fairborn in first and second. Representing the boys team, Taylor Ford finished seventh, behind Springfield Shawnee in first and Bellefontaine in second.
In individual efforts, sophomore Erika Chick handily won the 200 free in 2:01.73 and the 500 free in 5:30.44. Sophomore Elizabeth Malone won the 200-individual medley in 2:20.10 and also took the 100 butterfly in 1:02.96. Sophomore Mary Triplett earned a personal record in the 100 breaststroke, which she finished in 18th place.
On his own for the boys, Ford finished second in the 200-individual medley in 2:26.81 and also took second in the 100 breaststroke.
KTC youth basketball
The Mills Lawn KTC basketball teams played against the Greeneview Rams in Jamestown on Saturday, Jan. 23.
The sixth-grade girls lost 9–37. Jalyn Rowe and Kaliyah Fulton each had two points, and Jaden Johnson added one. The sixth-grade boys continued their winning ways by bruising the Rams 31–18, with every player scoring.
The fifth-grade girls fell 7–23, with Kaliyah Fulton scoring three points. Augie Knemeyer lead the fifth-grade boys to a 15–13 victory by scoring 11 points. Aakeem Truss forced key turnovers and had several steals in crucial moments in the fourth quarter to help seal a win.
The fourth-grade boys hustled for a 22–13 victory. Jayme Johnson and Andrew Clark each had 11 points and demonstrated good floor leadership. Travis Scarfpin led the defense.
