Sue Seely

Sue Seely died July 22. She was 83.
Sue was born March 9, 1927 in East Lansing, Mich. to Harlan Murray Hungerford and Sarah Irene Prichard. She grew up in Kent, Ohio, where her father was a professor of English at Kent State University. She attended schools in Waukesha, Wis. and Kent. She graduated from Oberlin College with an associate degree in English literature and from Kent State University with a bachelor of science degree in early childhood education.
Sue worked in Chicago in settlement houses, taught school and worked as a librarian. She was a foster parent during her first marriage and volunteered with many charitable organizations. Sue was married to the late John W. Hogarty who worked at Antioch College. She lived in Yellow Springs and Fairborn, Ohio, and Mesa, Ariz. Sue married Gilbert R. Seely on Aug. 15, 1969, and they joined their two families together. They moved to Bellingham, Wash. in 2000 and have been active members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where she was a member of St. Anne’s Guild, sang in the choir and volunteered with vacation Bible school.
She was a lover of the arts and of English language and literature. Music and travel were always an important part of her life, and she traveled on concert tours to Europe with the Arizona State University chorus. Sue will always be remembered for her love of children, especially babies.
Sue was blessed with many friends, and her fine wit and wisdom will be missed. She was preceded in death by her brother, Richard M. Hungerford. She is survived by her husband Gil of 41 years; by children of her first marriage, Anna, Timothy, Ellen and John Hogarty; by children of her second marriage, David and Mary, Dawna, Edward and Lisa and Robert and Kirsten Seely. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, John Jr. and Stephanie Hogarty and Elisabeth, Joseph, Kaleigh, Kyle and Connor Seely; by nephew Paul Hungerford; and by nieces Amy Sutton and Mary Beth Batt.
A memorial service will be held in Bellingham, Wash. on Saturday, Aug. 7. Memorial donations may be made to Glen Helen or another charity of choice.
