Beginning Saturday, Feb. 8, all calls within the 937 area code will have to be placed using the 10-digit or 11-digit telephone number. For villagers, that means either dialing, for example, the News’ number with the area code — 937-767-7373 — or with both the trunk code and area code — 1-937-767-7373,

The Public Utilities Commission of Ohio, or PUCO, instituted a six-month permissive dialing period in August of 2019, allowing users in the affected area to make local calls with either 7, 10 or 11 digits.

The change comes in preparation for the new 326 area code, which will be added as an overlay to the 937 region to ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers for the area; PUCO expects to begin assigning 326 area code numbers to new users beginning March 8, 2020. The overlay does not require customers to change their existing area code.

PUCO reminds local phone users that the change in dialing procedure will not change a call’s locality; according to a press release: “What is a local call now will remain a local call. The price of a call, coverage area or other rates and services will not change due to the overlay.”

Customers are reminded to ensure that all business stationery, advertising materials, personal checks and personal or pet ID tags include the 937 area code. Those who use safety and security equipment, such as medical alert devices and alarm and security systems, must be sure they are programmed to use 10-digit dialing.

Emergency services and information services with three-digit numbers, such as 911 and 411, will not require an area code and may still be reached simply by dialing the three digits.
