Lois Miller advances to state final

Sophomore Lois Miller’s eighth-place finish at the Southwest Ohio Regional Cross Country Championships last Saturday earned her a spot in the division III state final this weekend in Columbus. Miller becomes the third Lady Bulldog in school history to compete at the state championships and the first since 1995.

Miller charged to the front of the chase pack with her fastest first mile of the year, 5:59, and stayed consistent throughout the race, finishing the 3.1 miles in 19:44 with a last-minute kick to take eighth place.

“Lois aggressively attacked the Troy course,” said Coach Vince Peters. “That was very important with 134 women in the very competitive field. She battled throughout and finished dramatically with a big kick!”

Miller competes against 140 women at the Ohio State Cross Country Championships at Scioto Downs Race Track in Columbus this Saturday at 1:15 p.m.

In the boy’s regional finals, Yellow Springs seniors Gabe Amrhein and Nerak Patterson ended their seasons with strong efforts amidst intense competition. Patterson finished 79th overall in 18:17 and Amrhein placed 96th in 18:35.

Boys soccer loses in district final

The YSHS boys soccer team ended their tournament run last Thursday, losing 2–0 in the district title game to Cincinnati Summit Country Day (14–1–4). It was the fourth year in a row the Bulldogs advanced to the district finals.

Despite an outpouring of community, alumni and fan support for the Bulldogs, Cincinnati Summit’s defense kept Yellow Springs from scoring and netted two goals to secure the win. After starting 1–5, the Bulldogs ended their season with a deep tournament run and a 7-–8–3 record.

Girls soccer ends season in sectionals

On Tuesday, Oct. 19, the YSHS girls soccer team (1–15) lost to Northwestern (13–0–2) in the first round of the sectional tournament. Playing in 35 degree temperatures, the Lady Bulldogs lost 9–1 after trailing 6–0 at halftime.

Sophomore goalie Maryah Martin tallied 18 saves in the first half, keeping Northwestern off the board for the first 10 minutes of the match. Freshman Zarine Giardullo saved 13 shots and allowed only three goals in the second half.

With 10 minutes left in the game sophomore Keturah Fulton put the Lady Bulldogs on the scoreboard with a goal assisted by Martin and freshman Brianna Ayers.

The YSHS Girls soccer program received honors from the Metro Buckeye Conference for the following players — Anne Weigand, senior, Sportsmanship Award; Kelsey Cundiff, senior, Sportsmanship Award; Elyse Giardullo, senior, Second Team-All Conference; and Maryah Martin, freshman, First Team-All Conference.
