Eighteen local and regional poets will read nature-inspired poems this Friday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. at the Vernet Ecological Center, formerly the Glen Helen Building. The program is sponsored by Tecumseh Land Trust, or TLT, and the Glen, and is free to the public.

Each poet will have three to five minutes to read, according to organizer Ed Davis, and following the prepared readings there will be an open mic for others to share their creative work. Wine and cheese will be served following the reading.

The event is a “friend-raiser” rather than a fundraiser, according to TLT Director Krista Magaw, who said the poetry reading is the first of a series of TLT-sponsored events that seek to find creative ways to celebrate nature. Tecumseh Land Trust, the local land trust organization, is currently working with Glen leaders to fund conservation easements for the 1,000 acre Yellow Springs nature preserve. According to Glen Director Nick Boutis, efforts to preserve the Glen began in the 1920s, with former Antioch College President Arthur Morgan. That 90-year effort could be drawing to a close, as the groups hope to close this month on the funding for the first stage of Glen preservation.
