Girls share first ever MBC title
Disappointment was palpable last Friday night as the Yellow Springs girls basketball’s reach for the first league title in school history seemed to slip through the team’s fingers. The Troy Christian Eagles, celebrating senior night on Feb. 8, beat the Lady Bulldogs 34–22 and claimed at least part of the Metro Buckeye Conference title. But a few nights later, Troy Christian lost its last regular season game, giving the two schools each the same 10–2 league record and an even half of the conference championship.
“I’d first like to thank Xenia Christian…” Coach Tim Barga joked this week before complimenting his team on a season of dedication and hard work. “These girls really come out to play… we didn’t have many girls on the team, but they really want to win the league. And every time they won they wanted the next one worse than the one before,” Barga said.
Defense was what really won the team its title, Barga said. Though the team wasn’t a high scoring group, putting up about 42 points per game, the Lady Bulldogs gave up an average of just 28 points per game, which cinched many of the team’s wins. His team played smart, too, Barga said, referring to crucial help and support from Assistant Coach Jack Hatert.
The Lady Bulldogs were confident going into Friday’s game. They beat Troy Christian earlier in the season. But the Lady Eagles came out even hungrier and held Yellow Springs back 15–9 in the first half. The Bulldogs packed in the points in the third quarter, coming within two points of the would-be victors. But the gap widened to an unrecoverable span in the fourth.
Angela Allen was Yellow Springs’ high scorer, with eight points, followed by Brianna Ayers and Maryah Martin with five each, and Kennedy with four points. Martin had one 3-pointer.
Earlier in the week Yellow Springs clinched an easy 56–19 win over Schroder. Ayers was the high scorer with 17 points, followed by Harshaw with 14 points, and Allen with 13. Keturah Fulton and Molly Malone each scored two for the Lady Bulldogs.
The Yellow Springs girls ended their regular season 15–7. The team plays its first tournament game at Monroe on Thursday, Feb. 14.
Boys ball falls to Troy Christian
On Friday, Feb. 8, YSHS boys basketball pushed Troy Christian into overtime before they stalled, giving up a 61–56 win to the Eagles on their turf. Tied at 38 entering the final quarter, Wesley Moultri strung together three in a row to put the Bulldogs up 44–40 with three minutes left. But a TC layup, a triple and a foul shot tied it again for overtime. The Eagles (18–2, 10–0) made 10 out of 14 free throws in the extra period to close the game.
For Yellow Springs, P.J. Russell shot 18 points, while Moultri and Robbie Jones each had 12. Roland Newsome put up 10 points for the Bulldogs, and Eric Lawhorn had four. Jones and Russell each had two triples.
Yellow Springs is now 11–6 for the season, 6–3 in the MBC.
In the junior varsity game, Troy Christian again outplayed Yellow Springs 49–30.
McKinney boys fall to TC
The McKinney boys basketball team played its last game Monday, Feb. 11, against Dayton Christian in a hard faught battle, falling 36–28. Every Bulldog player contributed in scoring, rebounding and a strong defense, closing out a season in which all the players came together as a team.
McKinney struggles at Emmanuel
The McKinney girls basketball team lost to Dayton Christian on Monday, Feb. 4, 31–18. Kaliyah Fulton scored eight points; Maya Creighton had four points, and Gracie Price, Amani Wagner and Jasmine Davidson had two points each.
On Feb. 5 the seventh grade girls lost to Emmanuel Christian 22–12. Davidson was the high scorer with six points, followed by Price with three. The seventh-grade girls lost their tournament game to Troy Christian 23–17. Price had 10 points and Zoe Greenwood had five. The team finished the season 2–8.
The eighth-grade girls also lost to an undefeated Emmanuel Christian 25–32. Elizabeth Smith was the high scorer with 18 points, followed by Julie Roberts with five points. The eighth-grade girls also won their first round tournament game beating Middletown Christian 25–19. Elizabeth Smith had 19 points.
