Jean M. McCulloch died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 10 at home after a brief illness. She was 89.

Jean was born on June 7, 1923 in Springfield, the daughter of Houston and Helen (Ness) Moores. Jean attended Springfield High School and graduated from Sweetbriar College in Virginia in 1945. She married Rudolph McCulloch in 1953, and her love of the outdoors led her to a farm near Pitchin, where she raised beef cattle and horses, eventually training and showing a national champion pleasure horse.

Jean wlll be remembered as a caring woman who was very passionate about the people and causes that she loved. She was a longtime volunteer for the Clark County Heritage Center, and was a tireless advocate for the deaf community in Springfield and for Glen Helen in Yellow Springs. Jean was an avid gardener, enjoyed playing music and was a member of several dulcimer groups and an old-time fiddle band. She loved genealogy and had traveled to Norway several times to visit distant cousins still living there.

Jean was preceded in death by her husband Rudolph and a son, Rudolph Jr. Survivors include her son Bill and his partner Brenda of Springfield, stepson Joe and Kathy McCulloch of Minneapolis, grandchildren Sarah, Michael and Caitlin, and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Private burial will be in Ferncliff Cemetery. Calling hours and a celebration of Jean’s life will be held at her family farm, located at 7391 S. Pitchin Road on Saturday, Feb. 16, 3–6 p.m.
