More than 75 artists from Ohio and beyond will gather under the shade trees on the grounds of Mill Lawn School, in the heart of the village, to show and sell their original fine arts and crafts at this year’s Art on the Lawn fair Saturday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., rain or shine.

In its 37th year, this popular, free, outdoor festival of art, food and music, is sponsored by Village Artisans Gallery of Yellow Springs. The work on view and for sale will include ceramics, drawings, fiber art, garden art, glass, jewelry, leatherwork, mixed media, paper craft, paintings, photography and more. Food vendors and live music will complement the booths of juried work.

Of the 75 participating artists, about two-thirds are returning from past years, while the rest are new to the show.

This year’s featured artist, named Best of Show at 2021’s festival, is Jeff Smith, a photographer from Spring Valley.

Smith was a pilot with the U.S. Air Force for 24 years. Largely self-taught in photography, he specializes in landscapes. According to a press release about Saturday’s event, Smith says sunset and twilight are his favorite times of day to capture, but it’s not always easy.

“Occasionally, after many failed trips,” he said, “I’ll experience a fleeting moment when it all comes together; where patience, anticipation and preparation produce stunning scenes which evoke awe and excitement.”

About 340 of Smith’s prints currently hang on the walls of hospitals, physicians’ offices, and professional spaces throughout the Miami Valley. The United States Postal Service selected one of Smith’s images to be included as selvage in a series of stamps this year. His work can also be seen on his website, ArtofFrozenTime.com
