  • Autumn harvest

    The farmers markets are still happening every Thursday, 2 to 6 p.m at the South Town Market in the General Dollar parking lot and Saturday from 7 am until noon at the Kings Yard and the Corner Cone parking lots with plenty of autumn produce.

    Monica Hasek organized a Yellow Springs Version of the memoir “Eat, Pray, Love” last Thursday with the help of Yoga Springs Studio, the Winds Cafe and the Little Art.

    The butter-yellow chicks twittering about in their baby blue swimming pools look and sound happy and healthy. Though in about six weeks, most of them will become someone’s dinner, their brief lives will be spent frolicking with their brothers and sisters with plenty of grains, bugs and grass to eat. The folks at New Liberty Farms would have it no other way.

  • Forest gardens in your own yard

    Permaculturist Dave Jacke hugged a stinging nettle plant at a farm homestead on Hustead Road, where he will teach a seven-day workshop on creating edible forest gardens next week. Jacke will also give a free public lectures at the Glen Helen building on homescale food production and enhancing soil fertility on Aug. 9 and 11.

    Growing food in a backyard garden can be a lot of work. But by designing a “forest garden” of trees and shrubs, aligned with ecological principles, gardeners can achieve a food yield sustainably, with less maintenance. This is the essence of a seven-day forest gardening workshop from Aug. 9 to Aug. 15 on a farm homestead north of Yellow Springs on Hustead Road…

  • CJ’s to cook up ‘Bama food

    Soon food hounds can get a taste of Yellow Springs’ new restaurant, CJ’s Southern Cooking, located in the building formerly occupied by Kentucky Fried Chicken. Owners Jim Zehner, left, and Carl Moore, both longtime villagers, plan to serve what they call ‘Bama Food, from Moore’s Alabama childhood, including fried bologna sandwiches, gumbos, collard greens and sweet potato pie. They hope to open June 27.

    f you’ve traveled along the south end of Xenia Avenue recently, you may have noticed the banner hanging from the former Kentucky Fried Chicken building: “CJ’s Southern Cooking Coming Soon.”

  • Fine local wines, engineered to taste

    In June Jim Brandeberry and his family opened Brandeberry Winery on their 10-acre farm on W. Jackson Road in Enon. Four miles from Yellow Springs, the winery is the closest producer of chardonnays, cabernets and sweeter berry wines within 40 miles of town.

    Most first-time visits to the new Brandeberry Winery in Enon include a tour of the production room simply because everyone wants to know — how does one make good wine from grapes grown in Ohio? A recent customer, who drove through fields of nine-foot corn last week to get to the 5118 W. Jackson Road farm, wasn’t leaving without the secret to the sauce.
