Cubs trail Pirates by three

The area’s continued wet weather again played havoc with the Minor League’s third full week of play, where the Cubs’ 3–4 record is slowly gaining on the Pirates, still undefeated for six games.
On Monday, June 23, the Pirates won the week’s first game by forfeit, only to lose 10–2 in a scrimmage game against a patchwork Indians team. Using players borrowed from other teams, the (mostly) Indians pounded out 17 hits, with three each coming from Nathan Hardman, Liam Creighton and Grant Reigelsperger. Hardman, Creighton and Fisher Lewis all scored two runs each. The normally tough Pirate defense was missing in action, and the usually hard hitting Pirates managed only eight hits, starting with Augie Knemeyer’s triple in the third, which was knocked in by Nate Gillman-Baggett. Aiden Cooney scored the only other Pirate run after hitting a single and then being sent home on Isaiah Taylor’s hit.
Rains on Wednesday, June 25, forced the postponement of contests between the Reds and Dragons as well as the Yankees and Pirates. Rain on Thursday also shortened a make-up game to three innings that saw the Cubs defeat the Dragons 7–3. The Cubs put five runs on the board in the first inning after base hits from Kaner Butler, Evan Pace and James Fulton and a double by Adam Greene. Ethan Perkins then stepped to the plate and hit his first two-run home run. Butler and Greene both tripled and Greene scored on Evan pace’s second hit and RBI of the game. Taran Pergram led off for the Dragons with one of his two doubles and was sent across the plate by Jake Savage’s single. Grant Reigelsperger then smashed a triple, scoring Savage, and later crossed the plate off Zane Pergram’s base hit.
A wet field took Friday’s game to the field with lights, where Miranda Pelzl knocked in the winning run that propelled the Cubs to a 3–2 victory over the Yankees. Adam Green scored the team’s initial run when he was knocked in by James Fulton’s single. Sulayman Chappelle was then knocked in by Sawyer HaleWolfe, both of whom went two for two. The Yankees rallied in the fourth to tie the game at 2–2 when Joe Thorp hit one of his two singles and was then knocked in by Ian Chick’s base hit. Liam Weigand followed with another base hit that scored Chick to tie the game. Other Yankee hits came off the bats of Ben and Cameron Croft and Danny Horton.
Rain again on Saturday morning, June 29, forced the postponement of the Dragons vs. Indians, but the skies cleared for two other games. In the first, the Yankees bounced back from their loss to the Cubs to defeat the Reds 6–3. Ian Chick led with a single and a triple, two runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Ben Croft, Joe Thorp and Tyler Restau all scored after base hits, as did Liam Weigand, who went two for two and added an RBI. Cameron Croft smacked a first-inning single that scored two runs, while Olivia Chick earned an RBI with a base hit of her own while Evelyn Greene also singled. Down 6–0, the Reds mounted a fourth-inning rally when Christian Werner and Tom Amrhein both singled and were then knocked in by Keanan Onfrey-Curley. He subsequently scored their final run.
Saturday’s second game included at least one hit by every Pirate player in the team’s 14–0 shutout of the Cubs. Jacob Whetsel led the charge with a triple, three RBIs and two runs scored, including a home run. Jared Scarfpin went two for three and also scored a pair of runs and knocked in three others. Nathan Miller and Aaron Sherwood also each scored two runs and an RBI. Rookie Jasmine Davidson’s work at the batting cage has paid off, as she smashed a single and a pair of doubles and scored a run. Meanwhile, another rookie, Aiden Cooney, earned the game ball for his two for three performance with a run scored and three RBIs.
