Bulldog Sports Round-up

Bulldogs advance in sectional

On Tuesday, March 3, the YSHS boys basketball team upset Bethel, the number-three seed in the Division IV sectional tournament, in a 55–50 victory. The Bulldogs play next on Friday, March 6, against Southeastern, the number-two seed, at Vandalia Butler High School, 8 p.m. Tickets are available at the YSHS office.

In a rematch of last year’s sectional championship game, Yellow Springs evened the score against Tri-Village by beating them 55–49 on Saturday, Feb. 28, in the first round of tournament play. The game was an upset for Tri-Village, seeded fourth in the section and ranked fifth in the Miami Valley area by the Dayton Daily News ranking, while Yellow Springs is seeded eighth.

It took the Bulldogs half the game to get in gear, and their slow start cost them a healthy 37–29 Tri-Village lead at the halftime. But by the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs had zeroed in on their defensive pressure for turnovers that allowed guards Kevin Sikes-Gilbert, Ryan Newsome and Ian Wimberly some dribble penetration to the bucket. And with the ’Dogs going 17 for 18 from the free throw line, they managed to outscore Ansonia 26 to 12 in the last period.

The Bulldogs’ four double-figure players were Newsome, with 12 points, Wimberly and Sikes-Gilbert with 11 each, and Raphael Allen with 10. Ryan Phillips also played a key role, pulling down nine rebounds for the team.

Chick 4th, Malone 5th at state

YSHS freshmen Erika Chick and Elizabeth Malone swam with the best of the competition at the state championships held at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton on Saturday, Feb. 28.

In a bigger, slower pool for the 200-yard freestyle event, Chick finished fourth in 1:55.72, just off her time at the district meet. And in the 500 free, she took seventh in 5:08.27. Malone snagged a fifth place finished in the 100 butterfly in 59.51, and then took 11th in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:14.58.

Freshmen boys win tourney

The Bulldog freshmen basketball team triumphed over Jefferson 47–36 for the area championship on Thursday, Feb. 26. Bulldog AJ Wagner scored the game’s first points toward an eventual 26–22 halftime lead that carried through to the end.

Wagner put up 16 points for the Bulldogs, while Cole Edwards and Greg Felder added eight points each. Marcus Green had nine rebounds, and Jake Fugate had six assists.

Girls lose to Ansonia

In the first round of Division IV sectional tournament play on Saturday, Feb. 28, the Yellow Springs High School girls basketball team lost 66–42 to Ansonia, a team the Lady Bulldogs beat earlier in the season.

Defense was the name of the game that night at Brookville High School, and Ansonia controlled the tempo from the start. Ansonia clamped down on Stephanie Scott, who shot 13 points for the game, and Ashanta Robinson, who put up 12 points, despite having just come off an ankle injury from an earlier game.
