Girls soccer takes early hits
The Yellow Springs High School girls soccer team lost 3–0 to Miami Valley on Saturday, Aug. 29, and then fell hard at 9–0 against Tecumseh on Monday, Aug. 31. The scores did not tell the whole story, however, and Monday’s game appeared more balanced than Saturday’s. The girls start their season off 0–2.
Against the Miami Valley Rams, keeper Maryah Martin got a straight 60-minute workout, blocking a shot on the Bulldog goal every couple of minutes. Sophomore defender Elizabeth Malone spent the game slide tackling the ball to halt the Rams’ forward momentum, while junior Natasha Perry proved a defensive force to be reckoned with. Senior Anna Karling Khan played the ball forward as much as possible, but the Rams plowed the home team under.
Under the lead of new head coach Angelo Caliguiri, the Lady Bulldogs changed up their positions throughout the night against Tecumseh and, with Martin out front as a forward, managed several strong plays and shots on goal. But keepers Katie Triplett and Robyn Weigand had their work cut out for them.
Boys soccer wins 1, loses 2
The YSHS boys soccer team opened its 2009 fall season this past week against three tough opponents, losing the first two games, and earning a hard-fought victory on the road in the third.
On Tuesday, Aug. 25, Yellow Springs hosted the Chaminade Eagles for a close first half and took a 1–0 deficit into the break. The Bulldogs’ non-existent defensive pressure and unwillingness to challenge for the ball in the air, however, allowed the visitors to add four more unanswered goals in the second half and put the game out of reach for the ’Dogs.
Saturday, Aug. 29, Yellow Springs took on the perennial small-school powerhouse Springfield Catholic Central and took a 7–0 loss.
Yellow Springs traveled to challenge the Greenon Knights on Monday, Aug. 31. A scoreless first half was followed by the game’s only goal partway through the second half. Bulldog Jake Trumbull lobbed the ball from the midfield stripe into the run of teammate Alexis Onfroy behind the Greenon defense. With pressure from behind, and the Knights’ goalkeeper charging from the front, Onfroy dribbled into the penalty box and placed a perfectly struck shot into the far-post side netting to give the local side the lead. Yellow Springs’ stingy and scrappy defense put together a gritty performance, while Bulldog netminder Ryan Phillips made two brilliant saves in the closing minutes of the game to make their goal stand up.
Footballers lose to Bradford
The Bulldog football team’s season opener against Bradford on Friday, Aug. 28, ended with a 62–14 loss for Yellow Springs.
The game started with an early Bradford touchdown, delayed by one down when Ryan Newsome and Keida Johnson made a successful tackle. Bradford ran for the extra point but was stopped cold by Austin Bailey, assisted by Newsome. Bradford got another touchdown before a thunderstorm delayed Bradford’s eventual 28–0 second-half lead.
The Bulldogs scored in the second half when Ian Wimberly caught the kickoff and ran the ball for 63 yards. The next play brought Newsome in for a touchdown, and the extra point kick by Cole Edwards was complete. Newsome scored again before the game’s end.
Devonne Freeman had six tackles, and Sam Morrison had five tackles for the Bulldogs.
Golf team takes its lumps
The YSHS golf team lost by one point to Springfield Catholic at Locust Hills on Thursday, Aug. 27. Yellow Springs had 185 to the Irish tally of 184. For the Bulldogs, Carl Wiener shot a 37, Lucas Donnell a 47, Zeb Reichert had 50 and Wade Huston shot a 51.
Yellow Springs is 1–7 for the season.
Cross country teams building up
The YSHS cross country season got underway Saturday, Aug. 29, at the Bob Schul Invitational in West Milton, where the Bulldog boys team finished up ninth out of 18 teams and 218 runners. Russia won the day, while Minster finished second.
Leading the squad into competition were co-captains Birch Robinson-Hubbuch and Gabe Amrheim, who set the pace for a 38th-place finish in 18:41. They were followed by the four-man classic pack of sophomore Nathaniel Reed (who finished 52nd), junior Mitchell Brickson (54th), sophomore Zach McHugh (56th) and junior Josh Meadows (59th). Brickson and Meadows posted lifetime bests of 19:08 and 19:15, respectively, and senior Robinson-Hubbuch rounded out the top six in 69th place.
The girls’ team, built around the nucleus of captain Reini Brickson, last year’s MVP Hannah Kumbusky and two rookie 9th graders, Lois Miller and Paloma Wiggins, showed outstanding potential at the Bob Schul meet on Saturday, according to head coach Vince Peters.
Miller finished sixth overall in 20:13, and Wiggins finished 15th in 21:26, both showing off their budding talents. Brickson took 44th place, with Kumbusky in 107th and junior Kelly Miller in 172nd place. But none of Yellow Springs’ talent could overcome the strength of two of the top three teams in the 2009 state rankings, Minster and Versailles, who finished first and second at the meet, while Yellow Springs finished 7th out of 23 schools.
