Tennis team gets first win

The Yellow Springs High School tennis team lost its game against Dayton Christian on Monday, April 19, at Fisher Park in Dayton. The final score was 1–4.

At singles, Addison Pettiford went out to the early lead, then lost 4–6, 2–6, while Will Turner lost 5–7, 3–6. Nerak Patterson stepped into his first varsity match at third singles, but lost 0–6, 0-6.

Two regular singles players, Carl Wiener and  Isaac Haller, paired for a disappointing doubles loss, while Savita Bathija and Nick Sontag had a terrific three-set conference win at second doubles, 6–4, 2–6, 6–4.

On Wednesday, April 21, Miami Valley School, undefeated in Metro Buckeye Conference, took all five courts, although the highlights included Pettiford improving his games-won record against the league’s top player 2–6 and 3–6. Turner constructed terrific points, making his second singles opponent work hard and long for each point. The score of 1 and 2 does not fairly describe the high quality of play.

At doubles, Wiener and Sontag had their hands full with their competent opponents and were not able to get a game.

Jacob Hardman gave a strong effort at JV singles.

YSHS team numbers were hurt in recent weeks by the student athletes in the school musical being restricted from sports participation.

However, everything changed on Thursday, April 22, when Yellow Springs brought in a major upset victory against league rival Xenia Christian due to teamwork by all and the perseverance of many.

At singles Isaac Haller won a two-set match against David McNeely by steadily hitting until the point was his. Isaac credited his serve consistency for the win.

Next win was a terrific doubles effort by Nicky Sontag and Will Turner, joining for the first time together in a competitive match.  They dominated the first set with their speed and court coverage 6–2, lost the second 4–6 when the team of James Thomes and Steve Panogian took the net but adjusted their play to take control of the third set 6–1.

The second doubles team of Savita Bathija and Jake Hardman had a hard loss against Tyler Stout and Ryan Branum, and Michael Keller and Nerak Patterson also represented well for the JV.

Carrying the weight of the team on courts one and two were Carl Wiener and Addison Pettiford. Both were in tough battling third sets against brothers Jared and Jason Holloway respectively. Carl on second singles was running his opponent side to side and using the full depth of the court. He battled with full intensity, dropping the match after more than two hours of play, 7–5, 4–6 and 3–6.

Pettiford was fully engaged on court one playing his “match of the season.” Under intense pressure Pettiford maintained the composure to play his game and get first serves in to win the third set tie break 9-7.  His competent pressure at the net forced the first win of the season for the Bulldog team.

Not only was this a win, but a major upset in league competition, a game hard fought and won by a team of only nine members.

The netters face Xenia Christian again on their courts May 7th to close the regularly scheduled season.
