  • A stormy but jubilant eighth-grade promotion

    A gym full of proud moms, dads, grandmas, aunts, uncles and friends attended the McKinney Middle School eighth-grade promotion ceremony on Wednesday, June 2, at the high school gym. Even a fierce thunderstorm and close lightning strikes couldn’t darken the mood of the 47 eighth-graders who received certificates of promotion that marked the passage from middle school to high school. The students also heard a presentation by guest speaker Jodi Pettiford and “Gudge’s 10 Tips to Eighth-graders” by retiring school principal John Gudgel, who advised the young people to turn their school work in on time, talk to their parents and be their own person.     In the last eight years the Yellow Springs United Methodist Church has transformed from a small, aging congregation to an active and renewed church under the leadership of Pastor Charles Hill. As the 76-year-old Hill retires, the church looks to a new pastor, Yellow Springs native Sherri Blackwell, to build on his accomplishments.

    Both Smaller Footprint Farm and Heartbeat Community Farm have thrived since going into business in 2006 by growing vegetables directly for their members using a model called Community Supported Agriculture, or CSA for short.
