Royals, Athletics split games
The Twins continue to lead the Major League standings despite not being able to complete a single game last week due to rain. Their game on Monday, July 12, against the Royals was called after three innings, with the Royals leading 3–2.
Meanwhile the Royals and Athletics split a pair of games in the week’s only action. In the first, the Royals took a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth and prevailed 7–6 thanks to Adam Green’s strong pitching backed up by great defense. The game was tied at 6 through four innings. Green not only struck out six of the A’s last nine batters, but helped seal the win with his own bat. Nathan Miller of the Royals doubled in the fifth and was then sent home for the go ahead and winning run when Green hit a double of his own. The Royals threatened again in the fifth, but a perfect toss from A’s shortstop Ian Chick to catcher Aaron Sherwood threw out Olivia Greco at the plate to prevent another run.
The same teams squared off again Saturday, July 17, but with a much different outcome. The A’s came out swinging, putting five runs on the board from three first inning hits and went on to win 12–2. A’s pitcher Devon Perry had the outstanding performance from the mound this time, striking out six in three innings while giving up only one run off five hits. Fielding Lewis scored three times for the A’s, with Aaron Sherwood and Isaiah Taylor each adding a pair while Perry, Chick, Carter Collins, Jonathan Elam and Liam Creighton, who knocked in the winning run, all scored once.
Next week is the final week of play, followed by the post-season tournament on Saturday, July 31. Games are played on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m., Sundays at 5 p.m. and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. at Gaunt Park.
Reds challenge Indians in Minors
The 2010 Minor League season wrapped up over the weekend with a split of the regular season and tournament championships between the league’s top two teams. The Indians are the overall league champs with an undefeated almost perfect regular season record of 9–0–1. But the Reds took the post-season tournament championship by defeating the Indians 12–2 on Saturday, July 17, in the season’s final game.
The Indians began the week on Monday, July 12, with a narrow 5–4 win over the third place Pirates. A final inning rally saw Kylie Johnson bring the Pirates within one when he was knocked home by Clay Cooper’s double. But the Indians secured the last two outs stranding Cooper and the tying run.
On Wednesday the Reds overpowered the Dragons 22–8. The Reds were led by siblings Amanda and Ethan Perkins, who both scored three runs, as did Jacob Woodburn. The Reds’ bats came alive in the final frame, though Jeff and Isaiah Crawford, Colton Bittner, Sam Bloom, Sean Adams, Eamon Cary and Walker Mills all scored for the Dragons in the final inning.
The final regular season game on Friday, July 16, turned out to be a preview of the tournament championship, when the Indians and Reds battled to a 9–9 tie. The Reds were up 9–5 going into the bottom of the ninth, when Jackson Bleything got a base hit and scored on Fisher Lewis’ triple who then scored on an RBI by Tony Marinelli. Both he and Parker Bleything then scored to tie the game.
In Saturday’s tournament, the Indians downed the Dragons 22–7, and the Reds took a 12–6 win over the Pirates, and then when the Indians and the Reds faced off in the finals, the Reds earned the title with a dominating 12–2 win. The Reds’ strong defense, hot bats and aggressive base running resulted in another 5–2 lead by the second inning, followed by more runs in the third and fourth. Jack Runyon, Dylan Rainey and Christian Elam all scored twice. One run each was added by Ethan and Amanda Perkins, Sulayman Chappelle, Albert Glover, Mason Lindsey and Eli Schell, who was knocked in for the winning run by Lucas Hudson-Groves. David Walker and Fisher Lewis accounted for the Indians scoring.
The Pirates finished third in the regular season standings with a record of 4–7, followed by the Dragons at 0–9.
