Joan G. Ranson

Joan G. Ranson, a former Yellow Springs resident, died Tuesday, Oct. 12 in Mason, Ohio, from chronic respiratory illness.

Joan was born Sept. 22, 1945, in Chicago to Stephen W. and Claire Dobson Ranson. She spent her early childhood in the San Francisco area and her teenage years in Massachusetts, where she attended Northfield School. Joan moved to the Yellow Springs area after marrying Malcolm Stokes, who was then a student at Wilberforce University. She was a certified registered nurse and worked for a number of years at Springview Developmental Center in Springfield. During the last decades of her life, Joan lived in Cincinnati, continuing her work with people with developmental disabilities.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Alice. She is survived and will be dearly missed by her former husband, Malcolm, her sister, Eleanor Nove, and by her loving children Keith Stokes and wife Tamela, Alexis Stokes and Danielle Stokes Poujade and husband Garvin. Joan is also survived by grandchildren Ashlee Stokes, Meghan Stokes and Mateo Poujade and by her great-granddaughter, Navaeh Ricker. A memorial service to honor Joan’s life was held Oct. 15 at Glen Helen and attended by family and close friends.
