Mills Lawn School students got an ear- and eyeful of baroque music madness when the world-class ensemble Red Priest gave an entertaining as well as educational performance yesterday morning in the gymnasium. The group had performed the previous evening to a sold-out crowd as part of the Chamber Music Yellow Springs (CMYS) concert series at the First Presbyterian Church.

Red Priest, based in England, is named after the nickname given to Antonio Vivaldi, arguably one of the most-recognized baroque composers, and known best for his “Four Seasons” violin concerto. He reputedly had a shock of long, red hair.

Red Priest’s fanciful and entertaining interpretations of baroque and renaissance music thrilled the young audience, as recorder virtuoso Piers Adam’s fingers flew with lightning speed and David Greenberg’s violin antics amused. The performances were punctuated by descriptions of the music, instruments and styles of playing, as well as by questions and answers on everything from what a harpsichord was, to how long each member had been playing music.

The special one-hour concert was arranged over a year ago by CMYS as an outreach event in addition to the group’s chamber series performance. For more information on CMYS and upcoming programs, please visit their website at http://www.cmys.org.
