Girls varsity end losing streak

The girls varsity basketball team ended their losing streak at Emmanuel Christian last week before dropping to Miami Valley at home on Friday and adding a victory at Jefferson on Monday. Their record is now 6–12 (4–6 in the conference).

A win over divisional foe Emmanuel Christian, 58–49, ended the team’s losing streak. Earlier in the season Emmanuel Christian came away with a 16-point victory. The Lady Bulldogs were led by Maryah Martin, who in addition to a season-high 26 points ended the night with five rebounds, five steals and two assists. Angela Allen contributed six points along with eight rebounds and three blocks, while Lois Miller scored six points, came down with five rebounds and dished out three assists.

The Lady Bulldogs then became a victim of the Metro Buckeye conference leader Miami Valley, losing by a score of 41–28. Down by only six points at the half, the team was hanging tough until their third-quarter scoring drought decided the game. In the loss Martin had six points and Miller contributed five points and five rebounds. Maya Hardman and Alex Beer each added four points.

In the defeat of Jefferson, 52–36, the Lady Bulldogs ended the game with 22 fourth-quarter points. Yellow Springs was led by Beer with 12 points and eight rebounds and Martin with 12 points and five assists. Allen ended the night with seven points in addition to four steals and three blocks, while Paloma Wiggins had six points and three rebounds.

Bruntz and Felder Jr. lead boys

The boys varsity basketball team split two games this week moving their record to 5–8 overall and 3–4 in the conference, where they now hold fourth place. Tyler Bruntz is the fourth-leading scorer in the conference, averaging 16 points per game through week ten, while Greg Felder Jr. is contributing nearly 11 points each game for Yellow Springs.

The Bulldogs defeated Miami Valley at home last Friday by a final score of 63–51. A 23-point final quarter solidified the conference victory for the Bulldogs, who went on a 16–4 scoring run. Felder Jr. had a season-high 21 points in addition to four rebounds, four assists, four steals and three blocks. Bruntz added 19 points while Cole Edwards had his first double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Isaac Haller dished out five assists and grabbed five rebounds while Devin Massie contributed nine points and nine rebounds.

The next night the team lost narrowly at Belmont, falling 69–61 despite a 10-point lead through three quarters. Belmont’s pressure defense caused the Bulldog guards to turn the ball over late, and poor defense from post players led to easy baskets for the Division I school from Dayton. Bruntz was strong in the game, netting 19 points, including eight of 11 at the free throw line. Felder Jr. ended the night with 14 points, while Massie had a season-high 10 points and Jake Fugate contributed a solid defense effort with three rebounds and two steals.
