Mills Lawn students are gearing up for this weekend’s performances of the Bollywood Jungle Book, the all-school musical. The performances take place Saturday, March 5, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 6, at 2 p.m. at the Paul Robeson Cultural and Performing Arts Center on the Central State campus.

Tickets cost $3 and may be purchased this week at Mills Lawn between 8–8:30 a.m. and 2:30-–3 p.m. It’s recommended that people purchase their tickets before the day of the show.

Teachers took advantage of the musical’s focus on Indian culture to engage students in a study of India. All 340 students took part for the past two weeks in an Indian immersion unit, which featured learning about classical Indian dance, Indian food, dress and literature, among other aspects of Indian life.

Last Wednesday villager Al Pana Sharma shared Indian stories and homemade food with students, and also demonstrated using material to wrap a sari. Here, she’s shown with third-grader Zoe Williams, who looked beautiful in her new outfit.

See the March 3 Yellow Springs News for a more detailed story on the performance and immersion unit.
