Yellow Springs passersby were treated to an accordion exchange Friday afternoon, Aug. 12, just next to the Emporium. Playing were local resident artist, musician and computer programmer Ben Hemendinger (read a profile on Ben and his accordion by Diane Chiddister), and Birkásné Sej Edit, one of several artists here on a cultural exchange from Budapest, Hungary through Wright State University.

It was a treat to hear a genuine Hungarian play Brahms’s ‘Hungarian Dances,’ in the varying, lilting rhythms that are part of that folk idiom. Because English was not a common denominator, communication remained at the musical level, which everyone seemed to understand.

  1. Yvonne Wingard says:

Street musicians are one the BEST things about Yellow Springs, but I DO wish they would stick to acoustic music. The occasional amplifier is TOO much; the music is nice but when it’s that loud it interferes with other things inside and conversation.
