Kasey Linkhart wanted to draw attention to the danger of Christmas tree lights. The seventh grade McKinney student’s drawing of a living room scene at Christmas time will be featured in a 2012 fire safety calendar put out by Dayton law firm Dyer, Garofalo, Mann & Schultz, who sponsored an area art competition with 1,200 submissions from over 75 schools. For being one of the top 12, Linkhart won a $250 gift card for herself and $1,000 for her school, which will go towards art supplies.

“I don’t think many people think about turning off Christmas lights when they leave,” said Linkhart, who used markers for her submission.

Fellow seventh grader Amelia Gray was one of 25 students to receive an honorable mention in the competition. Her drawing, in colored pencil, was of an overturned car on a slick roadway meant to highlight the danger of black ice. Gray was inspired by last February’s ice storm.

Also this week, nine Yellow Springs High School students received 21 awards between them in the national Scholastic art and writing competition. Among them, eight submissions were awarded the highest honor in the region (a gold key), six were given the silver key and seven received honorable mentions. Most students submitted their original photography, while one was awarded for a digital art submission.
