The 16th annual AACW Blues/Jazz/Gospel Fest will take place this year from Thursday, Aug. 22 through Sunday, Aug. 25, bringing to town an array of blues, jazz and gospel musicians.

The event starts tonight, Thursday, Aug. 22, at 7 p.m. at Peach’s Grill with the annual “Blooz and Pomes.” Local poets will perform at the event, which is hosted by Bomani Moyendi.

On Friday, the music part of the festival kicks into high gear at 7 p.m. at the Antioch College Amphitheatre with the Carl Schumacher Band, followed at 8:30 p.m. with Dean Sims of Springfield and his “Satchmo Show.” At 10 p.m. singer Virginia Martinez, who comes all the way from Uruguay, will perform.

The Innovation Stage, hosted by Karen Patterson, will take place Saturday at 2 p.m. on the amphitheatre grounds. This is a time for musicians and musician wannabes to jam and learn from each other.

Saturday night’s music events start at 7 p.m. with the rap group Village Fam at the amphitheatre. Next, from Atlanta, is blues singer Gillia, followed at 9:30 with Bluzion, with Gerry Greene. The Nerak Roth Patterson Band takes the stage at 10:30 p.m.

And on Sunday, the event winds up with the Gospel Fest at 5 p.m. at the amphitheatre, with Jeremy Winston Chorale, Gillia, Virginia Martinez, Nerak Roth Patterson and Dean Sims. The singing will be followed by a “basket meeting.”
