  • Out on a limb

In her commencement speech last Thursday, May 28, Yellow Springs High School valedictorian Mollye Malone described her bent toward documenting every moment with “shameless” selfies, then telescoped her smart phone for two such records: one of Malone and the Class of 2015 and one of Malone and a gym full of proud families, friends and teachers. • Kula means community + yoga

  • Mudding puppies at the Antioch School

In April, students and teachers started the straw bale playhouse project — which will have an open loft, a ladder and a slide — with a frame, followed by bales; last week they applied several coats of mud plaster. For more on the straw bale playhouse, go to antiochschool.org. (Photo by Lauren Heaton)

The Antioch School students have been working with builders-in-residence Beth and Andy Holyoke to build a straw bale playhouse of the kindergartner’s design.

  • Mills Lawn School students on task with four sides

One of the challenges for teachers of mathematics is helping students see the relevancy of seemingly abstract concepts in their daily lives. “When will I ever use this?” is an oft-muttered refrain.

  • Teaching justice, peace and protest

Local resident Talis X was arrested last weekend at protests over the acquittal of a Cleveland police officer of charges stemming from a 2012 shooting of an unarmed black couple. Talis X will speak about his experiences with police violence and injustice at an Antioch College teach-in on mass incarceration and prison justice Saturday, May 30, from 1 to 4 p.m. in McGregor 113. Local landscaper Talis X spent Memorial Day weekend in a Cleveland jail after leading a spontaneous street protest on Saturday when a judge acquitted a white Cleveland police officer in the 2012 shooting of an unarmed black couple.

Last week the Yellow Springs Senior Center organized a flash mob dance to the Isley Brothers 1959 hit “Shout” to commemorate National Senior Health and Fitness Day.
