Fellowship and cake at Tom’s Market

Tom’s Market was buzzing on Christmas morning. But Yellow Springers weren’t just picking up last-minute items for their holiday dinners. For many, errands took a back seat to fellowship and cake, yes, cake — fresh, fragrant and free, courtesy of owner Tom Gray and his wife, Evelyn. It’s her recipe (secret, of course) and every moist morsel was, according to official News taste-testers, delicious.

Christmas cake at Tom’s is a tradition for villagers like Elizabeth Price, who brought her own mug (coffee, too, was free) and recommended, with a conspiratorial wink, the rum version of the cake. (This reporter was pretty sure she detected rum in the piece she chose at random — honest!) Other villagers were coming to the festive front-of-the-store gathering for the first time, including Alice Robrish, who made a special trip for the cake — no pretense of grocery shopping needed.
