The Yellow Springs Board of Education decided at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning to close village schools Wednesday, Jan. 20, due to snow, cold weather and poor road conditions.

The National Weather Service indicates snowfall, mainly before 3 p.m., with morning temperatures at 17°F and a windchill factor of about -8°F. Highs will rise near 22°F with southeast winds around 6 mph later in the morning. Total daytime snow accumulation of around an inch possible. Temperatures will drop to a low of about 11°F, with winds becoming calm in the evening. Please check with your school or organizing individuals for cancellations or delays of after-school activities.

As of 8:30 a.m. Wednesday morning, the Antioch School and the Children’s Center have not yet indicated a change in schedule.

Wind chill:
Extreme temperatures in combination with wind produce perceived temperatures that can damage exposed skin. A windchill of -10°F can cause frostbite in about 30 minutes, although direct sunlight and shielding from wind can mitigate heat loss*. Please see the windchill chart at the bottom of this post or visit http://www.calculator.net/wind-chill-calculator.html for more information.
*Windchill Temperature is only defined for temperatures at or below 50°F and wind speeds above 3 mph. Bright sunshine may increase the windchill temperature by 10°F to 18°F.

Welfare checks:
Roadways and walkways are icy; Village police and Miami Township Fire Rescue will make rounds to check on people with known care issues. If you are concerned about someone’s welfare, please call the police so that they may check on them.

If you have no heat or are suffering from exposure-related issues, call 911. Please note that it is illegal for electric and gas providers to turn off services if the temperature falls below freezing.

National Weather Service windchill chart: Wind chill temperature is the temperature felt by the skin rather than the actual temperature due to the wind. The human body loses heat via convection, evaporation, conduction, and radiation. In cold air, wind around the body will increase the rate of heat loss. Therefore the body will feel the temperature to be lower than the actual temperature (From calculator.net/wind-chill-calculator.html)
