Gwilym Owen, Jr.

Gwilym Owen, Jr., 82, died on Friday, Feb. 6, at Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill, N.C. Gwil was born on May 5, 1933, in Springfield, and grew up in Yellow Springs. His father, also Gwilym Owen (known as Billy), was a physics professor at Antioch College. His mother, Edith Owen, was an elder in the Presbyterian Church.

Gwil graudated from Antioch, and did his Ph.D. work at the College of Forestry, SUNY, at Syracuse University. He was a chemist, teaching for several years at Denison University, and then worked as a research chemist for Owens Corning Fiberglas and Rechhold Chemicals. He was a passionate gardener and interested in wood working, photography and many other things. He is survived by his wife, Carol; three children, nine grandchildren and four great-grandhildren. Gwin and Carol lived in Fearrington Village, near Chapel Hill, N.C.

A celebration of life service will be held at the Community Church in Chapel Hill on April 2 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Antioch College in Yellow Springs.
