‘Blue Christmas’ honors complexities of season

And when those blue snowflakes start falling
That’s when those blue memories start calling

What if the joyous season … isn’t?

Not everyone is full of good cheer at Christmastime. The holidays can be challenging for those in mourning, for those disconnected from family and for those simply exhausted by feigning happiness. Recognizing the complex reality of the season, Yellow Springs’ First Presbyterian Church is holding a special service on Friday, Dec. 23, at 7 p.m. It’s called “Blue Christmas: You Are Not Alone,” and it seeks to acknowledge the darkness of the season — while bringing people together to look for the light.

All are welcome.

You’ll be doin’ all right, with your Christmas of white
But I’ll have a blue, blue blue blue Christmas

(Lyrics from “Blue Christmas”)
