  • Evelyn Chiddister

    Evelyn Chiddister, 89, died in Bloomington, Ind., on Tuesday morning, Aug.11, following an illness. A longtime resident of Goshen, Ind., Evelyn moved to Yellow Springs to be near her daughter in June 2007 after she fell and broke her hip, living first in the Friends Care Community Extended Care Center and then in the Friends Assisted Living Center, until her move to Bloomington four months ago.

    Lucy Marquerite Van Ness Fogg spent most of her adult life in Yellow Springs until eight years ago, when she moved to Carriage Court Assisted Living in Cincinnati. She died there on Saturday morning, Aug. 8. She was 92.

  • Summer open gym for girls basketball players

    The McKinney School and Yellow Springs High School girls basketball program is offering open gym sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 4 to 6 p.m. The sessions are open to any middle and high school girls interested in playing basketball. Players or parents with questions can contact Coach Duncan Thomas at 937-580-0152.

  • Dancing near the streets

    Many villagers celebrated dance last weekend, with two special Summer in the Springs events. Former Nonstop Institute dance teacher Jill Becker and friends entertained an appreciative audience Saturday afternoon with whimsical and dramatic improvisations on the Train Station lawn. Villagers also enjoyed dancing to the tunes spun by DJ Juju at the dance piazza on Saturday night at the 100 Corry Street plaza.   • Youth KTC basketball open gym for girls

    The Yellow Springs Youth KTC Select girls basketball program offers open gyms on Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., at the Bryan Community Center.   • Dick Miller memorial

    A memorial service for Richard (Dick) Miller will be held Sunday, Aug. 30, at 3 p.m., in the Glen Helen Building. After the service all are invited to a reception in the lobby to view a retrospective show of Dick’s long art career.

  • Barbara Davis

    Barbara Hamilton Davis died of heart failure on June 6, in Los Angeles, Calif. She was 80. Born Barbara Retta Hamilton on Jan. 7, 1929, in Yellow Springs, she was the third child of Etta Belle Perry and Kenneth James Hamilton.

  • Footballers to meet

    The Yellow Springs McKinney School football program will hold a meeting on Monday, Aug. 10, at 7:15 p.m. at the high school practice field for students and parents of students interested in playing on this year’s junior high football team. The coaching staff will discuss the team’s schedule and address questions and concerns regarding the season. For more information, contact head Coach Craig McCann at 532-5111.

    An open gym volleyball for high school girls will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays, in the Yellow Springs High School gym, from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information, contact Ryan Berning at 937-269-2808.

    While thunderstorms kept swimming to a minimum at Gaunt Park pool last Saturday, on Sunday warm weather attracted many takers. On a recent summer day Greg King, above, appears to plunge from the heavens into the pool.
