  • BLOG — Another season, another reason

On a boat in the rain in the middle of Lake Erie. (Photo by Anthony Fife)

To celebrate a year of wedded bliss, my husband and I decided to take a boat to Kelleys Island in the cold, wind and rain. It was as romantic as you might expect.

  • BLOG — Let it go

    just lucy

So she loves singing. And this is not really a problem, right? No, the problem is not the singing itself, but that she has, for the last several weeks, sung the same song over and over, almost without a break.

  • BLOG — Cold comfort

    Swallowed up by the nothing.

Wind chills of -39 degrees are enough to stop anybody making amused comments about my migration from a semi-tropical climate, though perhaps this is only because people’s mouths are hidden behind scarves or their teeth are chattering involuntarily.

  • BLOG — Whatcha got cookin’?

Baby Alive, circa 1992. A wonderful plaything that was both intermittently functional and terrifying.

When considering what to give my three-year-old for Christmas this year, I chose a gift I thought she would like, something that acts as a complement to many of the toys she already has and easily stores them, and which, most importantly, will require very little clean-up from me in the future.

  • BLOG — Let’s go to the movies, let’s go see the stars

    Dayton's Dixie Twin Drive-In.

Imagine, dear readers, if you will: a movie theater at which you supply your own seats, your own sound. At which children and adults alike are free to roam the grounds during the film without bothering anybody. At which you can literally close a door upon your rowdy child (and yourself, too, because we’re not monsters, here) and still enjoy the film?

  • BLOG — Par-tay!

Hopscotch and conversation at the Stafford and Union streets block party on Saturday, Aug. 17.

August 1 marked my four year anniversary as a resident of Yellow Springs, and in all that time, I had yet to attend one of the annual block parties until last weekend.

  • BLOG — Mermaid feet

A small gaggle of kids of all ages will gather at Gaunt Park Pool for the next two weeks for swim lessons. I was on hand with my daughter, Lucy, for the level one beginner class. (Photo by Anthony Fife)

My daughter’s first days at swim lessons at Gaunt Park Pool make me reflect (ha!) on my own childhood love for swimming.

  • BLOG — Le Fabuleux Destin de Moi

    woohoo wedding

Several weeks ago, I went to a screening of Amelie at the Little Art’s “Last Reel Film Festival.” Then I got married. I’ll explain how these two things are, vaguely, related.

  • BLOG — Motor Mama

    1993 Nissan, 2002 Lauren. 2013 Nissan, 2013 Lauren.

Last year, with a broken heart and nothing but $200 to console me, I wrote about the loss of my favorite car. And here I am, getting ready to write about cars again.

  • BLOG — Testing, testing

I began to wonder what it is that makes it so hard for me to approach people sometimes. In this particular case, it probably had at least a little to do with the fact that I was walking around wearing big ol’ headphones.
