  • Chinese food within reach again

    When Zhi You Gao and his son-in-law, Ken Yang, worked as chefs in Fujian Province on the southeast coast of China, they cooked in the Min style using ingredients such as crab, abalone, mountain mushrooms and fresh bamboo shoots.

  • Main Squeeze under new ownership— A smooth blend of old, new

    When Main Squeeze went on sale at the beginning of the year, customers may have worried about the fate of the local juice bar. But smoothie addicts can still get their fix at Main Squeeze.

    The Winter Farmers’ Market is going on every Saturday morning in the basement of the Methodist Church.

  • Year-round harvest— A field of greens among the white

    John DeWine and Michele Burns stood amongst the prolific kale of the wood-heated greenhouse at their Yellow Springs-Fairfield Road farmstead, Flying Mouse Farms. Their farm is the only source of local greens for direct purchase in the winter.

    At Flying Mouse Farms in Yellow Springs, there is no off-season.

  • Whey to go: local cheese arrives

    Nick Mronzinski stirred curds at Young’s Jersey Dairy in a cheese vat that has been used to turn the farm’s fresh milk into local cheese for the last 18 months. The yellow cheddar cheese made on a recent visit will be used to top burgers and salads at Young’s restaurants.

    Those who prefer local foods can now add a variety of locally-produced cheese to their diets, thanks to two area dairies that have recently been turning fresh milk into cheese.

  • Peifer Orchards lets the Autumn flavors flow

    Peifer Orchards will continue to press apple cider until December, when the cider season will end.

    The farmers markets are still happening every Thursday, 2 to 6 p.m at the South Town Market in the General Dollar parking lot and Saturday from 7 am until noon at the Kings Yard and the Corner Cone parking lots with plenty of autumn produce.

    Yellow Springs offers a second Farmers Market every Thursday at 2pm in the parking lot of Dollar General.
