  • Mills Lawn School Spelling Bee full of apprehension, exhilaration

    Mills Lawn School held its annual Spelling Bee Friday, the first round in what will eventually be regional, state, then national spell-offs.

    Although Beggars Night was rescheduled, Mills Lawn School’s annual Halloween Parade did take place, albeit in the slightly more accommodating confines of the school gymnasium.

  • YSI Inc. immerses kids in water

    Mills Lawn Elementary School fifth and sixth graders took a field trip last week to YSI Inc. (a Xylem brand) to learn about local and global water issues as part of a collaboration with the water-monitoring equipment manufacturer. YSI/Xylem has also purchased water test kits for the school to commemorate World Water Monitoring Day.     On a recent field trip, the Mills Lawn Elementary School fifth and sixth graders spent a day at YSI Inc. (a Xylem brand), learning about local and global water issues, and bounced a giant model of earth to symbolize the need for everyone to chip in to save the planet.

    Jonah Kintner, a Mills Lawn elementary student, has a service dog named Clank who helps him with everyday life skills. Jonah wants Clank to be able to come to school with him.

    The beloved wooden Big Toy was partially destroyed by a falling silver maple during a storm last July. In its place last week arose a mighty, multi-piece structure.

    While the district will begin so-called project-based learning (PBL) next school year, Ellen Guest has been exploring similar methods for decades, squeezing in projects wherever she could. That’s one reason her retirement at the end of this school year is tinged with sadness.

  • Young authors sign books

    Mills Lawn fifth graders participating in a project-based learning unit have put out an informational book about Glen Helen. The authors will hold a book signing and party in celebration of the completion of the book on Sunday, April 21, 4 p.m. in the Glen Helen Auditorium.
