    Four members of the Yellow Springs High School track team competed in the Division III state championships at The Ohio State University on Saturday, June 5. Mario Cosey, who ran in the 100-meter dash, was also joined by Josh Meadows, Logan Norris-Sayres and Chris Johnson in the 4×200-meter relay.

  • A stormy but jubilant eighth-grade promotion

    A gym full of proud moms, dads, grandmas, aunts, uncles and friends attended the McKinney Middle School eighth-grade promotion ceremony on Wednesday, June 2, at the high school gym. Even a fierce thunderstorm and close lightning strikes couldn’t darken the mood of the 47 eighth-graders who received certificates of promotion that marked the passage from middle school to high school. The students also heard a presentation by guest speaker Jodi Pettiford and “Gudge’s 10 Tips to Eighth-graders” by retiring school principal John Gudgel, who advised the young people to turn their school work in on time, talk to their parents and be their own person.   • A YSHS principal who ‘gets us’

    At a recent lunchtime at Yellow Springs High School, Principal John Gudgel, who retires this year as principal, was joined by a gaggle of students.     Of the thousands of youth he has mentored over the past 30 years and the stories that go along with each individual kid, there are a few that stand out in clear relief for Yellow Springs High School Principal John Gudgel.

    Friends and classmates since they were in elementary school at Mills Lawn, the Yellow Springs High School class of 2010 valedictorian John Michael Malone and salutatorian Dylan Amlin have plans. But they’re not plans in the typical sense. In fact, beyond college, their plans hinge precisely on not having a defined path with goals that would lead them to a job, a house and “settling down.”
