King Day essay contest announced The Yellow Springs Martin Luther King Jr. Day observance will take place Monday, Jan. 15, on what would have been the assas- sinated civil rights leader’s 95th birthday. The theme of the local observance is “Disfranchised: NO MORE!” In advance of the King Day events, Yellow Springs-area students are invited to enter an essay contest on the day’s theme. Drive to benefit county pantry Vincent Baker, a 2023 Xenia High School graduate, is sponsoring a drive to benefit the Greene County Fish Pantry. Baker has held several such drives in Xenia for other area causes under the title NeedsFirst. Kwanzaa celebration planned Dec. 30 The Yellow Springs Kwanzaa Planning Committee has announced that this year’s community event will take place Saturday, Dec. 30, 6–8 p.m., at the John Bryan Com- munity Center gym. The programwill include remarks on each of the seven Kwanzaa principles, perfor- mances by area artists and the Nguzo Saba (the seven Kwanzaa principles) 2023 Award presentation. The first is a five- course meal, with wines, for four people The meal, to be prepared by Susan Neff, will be planned with the winner to accom- modate their schedule and dietary needs. The meal value is $350. The second prize is two $75 gift certificates for the Three Ten Bed & Breakfast in Yellow Springs, to be used by the end of 2024 on any available room booked in advance. Raffle tickets are $10 each and can be purchased at the Senior Center; proceeds will benefit the Senior Center.
