Boys track third at KTC meet

The YSHS boys track team travelled to two meets last week, finishing sixth at Tipp City on Tuesday, April 13, and coming in third at Friday’s Kenton Trace Conference invitational meet.

Against nine other schools at Tipp City, the Bulldogs with 60 points fell in behind winner Russia, with 150 points, runner up Stebbins  with 117 and third-place finisher Tipp City with 85.

Yellow Springs managed two wins from Chris Johnson, who took the long jump in 20’1″ and started the 400-relay with Will Ripley, Antone Truss and Mario Cosey for a 46.23 finish. Cosey turned around for a second-place finish in the 100 meters (11.49) and a third-place finish in the 200 meters (23.69), while Ripley put up a second-place finish in the high jump (6’2″).

Josh Meadows took fourth in the 400, and Zach McHugh finished fourth in the 800. Truss took sixth in the high jump, while Mitchell Brickson was seventh in the two-mile. Solid efforts were also turned in by Charlie Fenimore, Nathaniel Reed, Dwight Thomas, Cory Thompson and Nick Whalen.

At the KTC meet on Friday, Yellow Springs earned 77 points for third place behind winner Clinton Massie with 147.5 and second-place finisher Cedarville with 84 points, out of a total eight teams.

The Bulldogs won first place in both the 400-relay with Johnson, Norris-Sayres, Ripley and Cosey in 45.74, and the 800-relay with Norris-Sayres, Johnson, Ripley and Cosey in 1:34.38. Johnson also took first in a long jump of 19’9″. Cosey was second in both the 100- (11.38) and the 200- (23.34) meter runs, while Ripley and Truss finished second and third in the high jump with identical 6’0″ performances.

In fourth place was the two-mile relay team of McHugh, Brickson, Meadows and Birch Robinson-Hubbuch in 9:08.1. The mile-relay team of Meadows, Truss, Cory Thompson and Dwight Thomas finished sixth, as did Gabe Amrhein in the mile.

Girls track fifth at KTC

The Yellow Springs Lady Bulldogs kicked off their season on Monday, April 5, at the Springfield Shawnee quad meet with a fourth-place finish, despite the meet being shortened due to inclement weather. With several athletes missing on Saturday, April 10, the Bulldogs finished 10th out of 16 schools at the Cedarville Invitational at Cedarville University. On Friday, April 16, the Lady Bulldogs came in fifth at the Old Kenton Trace Invitational at Waynesville.

At Shawnee, in the relays Maryah Martin anchored the women’s 4×100 to a victory and the 4×200 squad to a second-place finish. Joining Martin on the 4×1 that won in 56.45 were Natasha Perry, Angela Allen and Acala Cresci. Allen and Cresci were also on the 4×2 squad with Mariah Nichols replacing Perry.

Martin added a third-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles and a victorious leap of 4’8″ in the high jump to claim first place in that event. Perry took second in both the 100 dash in 14.45 and the long jump with a leap of 13’5″. Allen excelled in the discus, tossing the platter 84’0″ for third place, while Lois Miller took second in the one-mile run with a sub-six minute performance. Miranda Russell and Seirra Butler also ran well for the Bulldogs.

At Cedarville, distance ace Lois Miller led the team, placing fouth in the mile run in 5:50.62 and fifth in the two-mile in 12:41.46.

The Bulldogs sprint relay squads were fifth in the 4×200 in a season best time of 2:00.18 and third in the 4×100. Perry, Allen, Cresci and Martin composed the 4×1, while Elizabeth Gonder, Allen, Cresci and Martin were the 4×2. Gonder added an eighth-place finish in the 400 dash.

At the KTC meet, Miller led the team in points, tallying the squad’s lone victory with a win in the metric mile in 5:50.65. She also added a third place in the two-mile in 12:37. The freshman runner had a busy night and also ran a leg in both the 4×400 and the 4×800 relays.

The 4×100 relay finished third in 57.18, and in the 4×200 relay it was the foursome of Gonder, Allen, Cresci and Martin placing second overall in season best time of 1:59:42.

The top field event competitor of the night was Anna Karling-Kahn, who tossed the shot to a new personal record of 28′”.

While the ladies’ team failed to score any points in the short sprints and hurdles, they came up big in the long sprints with Gonder’s fourth-place finish in the 400 dash and Brickson’s sixth place in the 800.

McKinney wins home invite

Last Thursday April 15th, the Yellow Springs McKinney School hosted the traditional Bulldog Middle School invite. This year Yellow Springs can celebrate that the boys as well as the girls team won the meet with large margins. At the same meet Edward Johnson, Yellow Springs, broke the old McKinney School 200-meter hurdle record with a time of 31.5 seconds.
