College hosts talk on governance

Antioch College invites the Yellow Springs community to join in a dialogue about how best to ensure effective community governance in the revived college at a forum titled “Antioch College Community: What to Keep, What to Add, What to Put Out on the Curb?”

The event will take place Friday, Aug. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Coretta Scott King Center for Cultural and Intellectual Freedom at Antioch College, One Morgan Place.

Community governance, in which faculty and students were deeply involved in campus decision-making, was one of the three pillars of the Antioch College experience before the college was closed in 2008, with the other two pillars being a rigorous undergraduate curriculum and an innovative work study program. With the revived college set to welcome its first class of students in a year, Interim President Matthew Derr has established a College Task Force on Community and Community Governance to “ensure that this key component of an Antioch College education is under development when the new class arrives in the fall of 2011,” according to a college press release.

“The Task Force seeks a wide range of ideas about what the new Antioch College community should be,” said Task Force chair Al Denman, a former college faculty member. “We will inform and advise — but not decide for — the students, faculty, staff and administration as they form their own community and ways of making decisions.”

Friday night’s event will include a panel discussion with panelists  Paul Graham, Class of 1952, an alumnus and retired vice president of Vernay Laboratories; Chery Keen, former dean of community learning at Antioch College, who will speak about recommendations made in a 2005 report from a working group exploring the same topic; Rose Pelzl, a former student of the Nonstop Liberal Arts Institute; and Raymond Ruka, a Maori elder from New Zealand who lives in Clifton and works in Yellow Springs.

The discussion will be moderated by Jennifer Berman, Antioch College Class of 1984, who is secretary for the task force.
