Poetry readings continue at YSAC Gallery

Enthusiasts of the written word gathered again last night for an evening of poetry as Clark State professors and poets Chris Bay and Rachel Peterson read their work at the YSAC Gallery.
Before the reading, poetry-lovers mingled outside in the garden, thanks to the permission of building owner and creator Alan Macbeth.

Chris Bay, a current English professor and former business owner, was the first to present. His first poem, “A River With No Shore,” Chris described as being a haibun, a form that typically fuses prose with haiku. Contemplative and thick with images, the piece had a distinct air of the autobiographical, at least for the speaker, if not the poet himself. (The text of the poem can be found here.)
Rachel Peterson, also a Clark State professor of English, has a masters degree in theology and is currently finishing up her master of fine arts in poetry at Ashland University. She read selections from her manuscript, entitled “Burn.” The third piece she presented, “Love Song of a Sea Girl,” was inspired by T.S. Eliot’s “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” At the outset, “Love Song of a Sea Girl” answered Eliot’s piece in similar tone and pace, but as the poem progressed, settled into its own unique rhythm.
