There are several cooling centers open for Yellow Springs residents during this week’s heat wave, according to Village Manager Mark Cundiff at Monday’s Village Council meeting.

“If you don’t have air conditioning and need to get out of the heat, there are places for you to go in Yellow Springs,” Cundiff said.

The Greene County Combined Health District has issued a heat advisory through Friday, July 22. On Thursday, July 21, temperatures are predicted to be in the upper 90s, with high humidity, and they are expected to remain in the mid to low 90s through Sunday.

According to Cundiff, the John Bryan Community Center is open to all who need relief from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Villagers can also go to the Senior Center or to the Yellow Springs Library for cooling. The library is open noon to 8 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and is closed on Sunday. The Senior Center is open for regular business hours.

The health department also made the following recommendations for dealing with the heat:
1) Drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluids.
2) Decrease physical activity, and limit athletic activity to early morning or evening.
3) Wear loose, light weight cotton clothing.
4) Eat light meals.
5) If possible, use a circulating fan.
6) Check on those who may need help, especially the elderly.
