Yellow Springs Interim Police Chief Art Scott has come out of retirement for the second time to take the Village interim position. He started work this week, following the retirement last Friday of John Grote, who had been with the department for 25 years. Scott said he anticipates the interim position will last from three to six months.

Raised in the Lebanon area, Scott began his law enforcement career in that town, working as a patrol officer for 15 years before moving to the village of Milford, near Cincinnati, where he served as chief for seven years. He next was chief for five years in Mason, then for nine in Beavercreek, where he retired. He has been on the board of directors of the Ohio Association of Chiefs of Police, and was president of that group for a year.

In 2009, Scott came out of retirement the first time to spend a year in Afghanistan, where he served as an advisor to the man responsible for policy and strategy for the Afghan police. The year was, he said, “sometimes fun and sometimes scary. It was the experience of a lifetime.”

Scott said he is pleased to be working in Yellow Springs, and feels comfortable with the community policing style practiced by Grote and, before him, Chief Jim McKee. He and his wife live outside of Lebanon.
