Understanding the energy between the planets and how they affect us can help us to live more positive lives. That is Jennifer Johnson’s belief, and the reason she got interested in astrology 20 years ago. She believes she can help others to see their strengths and weaknesses, as determined by the universe, and use that information for spiritual growth.

“We wait for our story in the sky, and then we’re born. We’re all on an evolutionary journey, and we’re here to learn lesssons,” she said in an interview last week. “Our astrology chart pushes us to find what are our lessons.”

Johnson will give a free introduction to astrology at the Yellow Springs library on Saturday, May 12, 2–3:30 p.m. She will talk about the planets, their energies, and the 12 houses of experience, and she will teach participants how to do a basic reading of their own astrological charts. She welcomes participants to come anytime after 1 p.m. on Saturday to the library, where she will print out charts based on the exact time, date and place of birth. Those with their own charts are welcome to bring them.

Johnson has lived in Yellow Springs for 25 years. She has studied astrology intensively for the past four years and reads charts privately from her home on Walnut Street. She also taught a four-week introductory course on astrology at Bhakti House on Herman Street last fall. And she wants to offer the power of heightened self awareness to those interested in benefiting and growing from it.

The energies of the planets begin affecting us from the first moment we draw breath, and continue imprinting on our personalities ever after, Johnson said. The constellation of stars on the eastern horizon at the time of birth determines our rising sign and the location of the planets on the astrology chart. As the planets move, they may create either tensions and conflicts or openings and harmony, and “how we work with these energies is key to determining our inner peace,” Johnson said.

“There are ways to work on the energies of the planets we’re affected by — there’s always a negative and a positive response,” she said. “The more you understand your own inner conflict through your chart, the easier it is to take the ego out of it and have a productive response to those conflicts. That brings in more possibilities for a more fulfilling, happy life.”

Through her workshop, Johnson hopes to share the power of astrology with anyone who is interested in finding out more about their true selves. To find out more, visit Johnsons’s Web site, jjastrology.com .
