Mary Lou Mooney

Mary Lou Mooney, a former resident of Philadelphia and Mount Carmel, Pa., died Thursday, May 17 at the Mount Carmel Senior Living Community. She was 82.

Lou was a frequent visitor to Yellow Springs and sold her clay jewelry at Yellow Springs sidewalk sales.

Born Aug. 15, 1929, in Green Ridge, Pa., she was a daughter of the late William and Emma (Frye) Hollister. She was a graduate of Immaculata University and a retired school teacher. Lou worked for the Bristol Township School District, where she taught music, special education and deaf education.

She was a juried member of the Bucks County Guild of Craftsmen and the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. She exhibited her work at several galleries in Philadelphia and craft shows in the Pennsylvania tri-state area.

As a lifelong Democrat, she was committee chairwoman in the lower seventh district in Bucks County, and converted successfully several recalcitrant republicans to the democratic fold. She was a tireless poll worker, door knocker and vote-getter.

Lou was preceded in death by her husbands: Joseph Hinchey, and later, John Mooney.

Surviving are three children, Joseph Hinchey and his wife, Karol, of Smethport, Pa., former Yellow Springs resident Cathy LaPalombara, of Upper Marlboro, Md. and Jack Loftus, of Mount Carmel, Pa. She is also survived by three granddaughters, Caitie Hinchey, Kellie Hinchey and Paia LaPalombara, by close friends Michaline Picklo and Fr. Dan Troyan and her faithful dog, Daisy Mooney.

A mass of Christian burial was held at the Church of Our Lady in Mount Carmel.
