Truss qualifies for regionals

At districts last week senior track and field athlete Antone Truss jumped high and far to secure his spot in this week’s regional finals. Truss was the district champion in both the high jump (6´4˝) and the long jump (21´8˝). He also placed seventh in the 100-meter dash and eight in the 200-meter run, shy of qualifying for regionals.

“I was pretty happy with [my performance],” Truss said. “High jump was easy. Long jump took some work.”

Truss qualified for regionals in the high jump last year, but makes his first regional appearance as a long jumper. He’s already committed to join the Wilmington College track and field team next year.

As a team, the YSHS boys finished in 11th place out of 17 teams at districts. In season-ending efforts, strong performances were turned in by Dylan Boczar, Kalonji Cross, Connor Gravely-Novello, Cameron Henderson, Henrik Korsch, Devon Lewis, Cameron Miles, Max Mullin, Levi Perry, Nick Whalen and Bryce White.

Miller and Brown win districts

Lois Miller and Alex Brown won district championships last week, but they aren’t the only Bulldogs to move on to this week’s regional tournament. Miller and Brown, who qualified in their individual races, will be joined by discus thrower Angela Allen and fellow 4×800-relay teammates Riki Kida and Niki Worsham.

Miller returns for her third and final appearance at regionals this week by dominating the competition in the 3200-meter run at districts. Taking the lead with a powerful surge just prior to the end of the first mile, Miller would only extend her advantage from there to the finish line. Miller finished in 12:00.24.

In the 1600-meter run Brown took the lead before the end of the first lap and never gave it up. Brown’s winning time of 5:31.90 was her second-fastest of the season. This will be her first trip to regionals.

Allen, a junior, demonstrated superb discus technique in the finals with a lifetime best series of throws culminating with a crowd-wowing toss of 101´3˝. That earned her a fourth place finish and marks her second consecutive year of advancing to the regionals.

Back on the track the 4×800-meter relay squad came in third with a season-best time of 10:45.49. When Miller ran a personal best of 2:27 for 800 meters on the second leg, the Bulldogs nearly stole second place away from Cedarville.

Also scoring points, but not advancing to regionals, were AnnDee Pettiford in the long jump and the 4×400 meter relay team. Pettiford was a surprise district finalist when she flew a lifetime best of 13´11˝ and 3/4˝ during qualifying. The distance was good for eighth place. The 4×400 meter relay of Miller, Brown, Worsham and Allen finished in their second-best time of the year (4:43.92) and in eighth place.
