Salute to Eckenrode gallery

Highlights of this week’s Art Stroll include the last exhibit of a longtime Yellow Springs gallery, and the visit to town of a popular East Coast dress designer.
The Eddie Eckenrode Gallery atop Sam and Eddie’s Open Books, a downtown gallery for 17 years, will be closing at the end of this month, according to owner Sam Eckenrode last week. A celebration of the gallery, and the paintings of the late local artist Eddie Eckenrode, will take place during the Art Stroll from 6–9 p.m. this Friday, June 15.
The gallery is closing following the sale of the building to new owners, who have plans to use the second-floor space for short- and long-term housing (see article on page 1).
Over the years, the gallery has hosted many exhibits featuring the work of more than 100 local artists and writers.
The gallery is especially significant because Sam Eckenrode and Jocelyn Robinson organized the first Art Stroll about 16 years ago, Eckenrode said. The two decided to organize regular local gallery strolls after an evening when several galleries, including Sam and Eddie’s, just happened to have exhibits on the same night, and the women were delighted to see villagers wandering from one arts venue to another. Since then the Art Stroll has taken place twice yearly, following the spring and fall street fairs.
Also during the Friday night event, Philadelphia clothing artist Joanne Litz will be present at a fall trunk show of her Steel Pony design clothing at Julia Etta’s Trunk at 100 Corry Street. Litz and Julia Etta’s Trunk owner Julane Chaney have been talking about the designer visiting the village for several years, Cheney said, because her clothing is popular with local shoppers.
According to a press release, the Steel Pony fall collection “is about color; her new earthy shades of red and purple in modal play off slate grey…”
As with all Art Stroll venues, refreshments will be served.
Other June 15 Art Stroll participants include:
• The Spirited Goat Coffee House, 118 Dayton Street, will feature “Mardi Gras in Venice, Photographs of Mark Tyler,” along with coffee drinks and sweets.
• The Village Artisans, 100 Corry Street, celebrates with work of its newest member, Pam Geisel, a local textile artist. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
• “Exuberance! The Monday Morning Artists” an exhibit of watercolors by local artists who meet at the First Presbyterian Church on Monday mornings, will be featured at the Yellow Springs Arts Council Gallery, 111 Corry Street. The Yellow Springs Woodwind Quintet will play at 7 p.m. on the outdoor patio.
• “Vivid Line Drawings by Jean Rudegeair” will be featured at “would you, could you” In A Frame, 113 Corry Street, along with an assortment of original art and jewelry.
• “The Art of AJ Powers,” a Fairborn native, will be featured at The Winds Cafe, 215 Xenia Avenue.
• The Sunrise Cafe, 259 Xenia Avenue, will show “The Art of Claire Billionaire,” a collection of work inspired by nature, love, peace and happiness.
• “The Light on American’s Great Lands, prints of American landscapes by Ronald G. Levi,” will be on display at the Glen Helan Atrium Gallery at the Glen Helen Building.
