Frances Hill, resident of Friends Care Community, died on Friday, Aug. 3, a few days following her 87th birthday.

Frances Louise (Artis) Hill was born Aug. 8, 1925 in West Liberty, Ohio, to Alvie C. and Louise Hazel (Clark) Artis. She attended school in Logan County, Ohio and graduated from the Monroe Township School in 1944.

Frances married Lester Nelson (“Jack”) Hill on July 21, 1964 in South Bend, Ind. They made their home in Osceola, Ind., where they lived until his death in 1998.

Frances was devoted to her faith, and daily demonstrated her love of God by loving people. While she may not have given birth to children of her own, she was a mother to many, including her step-children, niece, nephews, grandchildren, cousins, neighbors and friends. Working alongside Jack, Frances also helped nurture many boys at the Family and Children’s Center in Mishawaka, Ind., as well as the countless Boy Scouts who made their way through Camp Tamarack in Jones, Mich.

Following the death of her husband, Frances returned to Ohio in 1998, making her home with her sister in Yellow Springs. She remained there until a stroke required the professional care provided by the employees and staff of the Friends Care Community in Yellow Springs. Although Frances entered the Friends Care facility against her will, vowing not to stay, not to like it and not to get to know the people there, she came to enjoy it as her home, and to embrace everyone connected with Friends Care as new members of her extended family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brother, Alva C. Artis, Jr., her sister, Ninabelle (Artis) Upchurch and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She is survived by her three step-children, Nelson (Sharon) Hill, Barbara Hill and Carol (Charles) Masters, her niece, Sherri U. Blackwell, two nephews, Marc (Sunita), and Brian Upchurch and grandchildren Keith Hill, Kevin Hill, Wejay Bundara, Jr., Lisa Sinclair, Tanya Schuh, Kimberly (Reuben) Spence and Kathryn Holt. She is also survived by her First Baptist Church family, by nine great-grandchildren, two great-nephews, one great-great grandchild and many neighbors, cousins and friends, including special cousin Stanley Eugene Clark of Bakersfield, Calif.

A memorial service in celebration of her faith and in honor of her life will be held on Saturday, Aug. 18 at 2 p.m. in the dining room of the Extended Care Facility at Friends Care Community, located at 150 E. Herman Street in Yellow Springs.
