Boys soccer stays unbeaten
The Yellow Springs High School boys soccer team looked to stay unbeaten this week with matches against Xenia Christian and Shawnee.

On Saturday the team aimed to defend its league title as they hosted Xenia Christian for their first Metro Buckeye Conference match of the season. Forward Jared Scarfpin started off the scoring in the 27th minute. After a 3–1 halftime lead, the visitors cut YSHS’s lead to within one before the Bulldogs ran away with it. Yellow Springs won by a final score of 8–3. On Tuesday, YSHS beat Shawnee by a score of 6–1.

The Bulldogs are now 5–0–1 with additional victories this season over Greenon (4–0), Greeneview (5–2) and Miami East (11–1). They tied Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy (2–2).

Walkey, Haught earn medals
Cameron Haught and Charlotte Walkey led the Bulldogs last Saturday to the finish line at the Ohio Classic Cross Country Meet in Hillsboro. The skies opened just before the start of the high school girls’ race, momentarily cooling the air but magnifying the humidity as 109 sets of legs charged off the starting line, according to Coach Vince Peters. Walkey was among the early leaders as she surged through the first mile in 6:40 before finishing 11th overall in 22:34. The top 25 in each race were recognized as medalists.

Christina Brewer and Olivia Brintlinger-Conn ran together for the first four kilometers of the 5-kilometer race. The pair dropped their pace from a 7:50 first mile to 7:43 for their second mile to advance through the crowded field. Brintlinger-Conn would have the better finish over the last hill to place 42nd in 25:15. Brewer was 48th in 25:45.

Maya Creighton and Emma Romohr completed the scoring with Creighton placing 91st in 30:35 and Romohr earning a new lifetime best by finishing 102nd in 34:03.

While the Lady Bulldogs beat Wheelersburg, Miami Trace and East Clinton they placed ninth overall with 223 points.

In the boys’ race, freshman Carmeron Haught was the quickest of the Bulldogs. A laid-back first mile in 6:12 was followed by an up-tempo second mile in 6:01 as Haught placed 24th overall with a final time of 19:45. A total of 148 athletes, representing 19 different high schools participated in the meet. Carter Collier was second for the Bulldogs, placing 63rd in 21:34. Levi Brown was third for the squad as he finished 89th overall in 22:49. Josh Seitz and Oluka Okia ran together, just a short distance behind Brown, placing 92nd and 95th, respectively, in 23:04 and 23:10. Both efforts were season-best performances. As a team the boys squad placed 11th overall.

Four runners achieve best times
A total of 19 middle schools participated in last Saturday’s Ohio Classic Invitational in Hillsboro. Two lightning delays didn’t seem to faze the young Bulldogs from Yellow Springs as all four runners had outstanding efforts and ran their best times of the year, according to Coach Vince Peters.

Jude Meekin was the surprise runner of the team as she was back in 28th place of the 76 girls in the middle school race when she passed through the first mile marker in 7:27. But then she shifted gears and took off sprinting back up the hills towards the finish line. Even while traversing the creek a half mile from the finish didn’t alter her stride as she covered the second mile in just 6:31 to place 13th overall. Her final time was 13:58. Alejandra Erazo improved from the 18:37 she ran at the Bob Schul Invitational a week ago to finish 49th overall in 17:13.

In the middle school boys race, Kaden Boutis had a very even race running 6:18 for his first mile, then 6:17 for his second half of the race. This allowed him to finish 26th overall out of the 145 finishers in the race. His final time was 12:35. Zack Lugo who was 178th in 15:27 a week ago made great improvements, placing 74th in 14:22 this week on a much more difficult course.

8th-grade Vball gains traction
After a couple of opening-season matches which saw the team struggling against very good opponents Indian Valley and Emmanuel Christian, the McKinney eighth-grade girls volleyball team started settling into their new system with a victory over Xenia Christian on Tuesday. The team is now 1–2 for the season.

Early on, Coach Bubba Worsham decided to challenge the team with specialized roles, which he believes will better prepare them what they will face in high school.
“I knew they were a bright group of kids, but they surprised me at just how bright,” Worsham said. “We covered the system one day at the end of practice. The next day, I asked if they wanted to run through it again and they said, ‘No coach, we got this.’ And they did. They haven’t looked back since.”

The team rebounded after losing to a strong Emmanuel Christian team last Thursday, winning their match at Xenia Christian in two sets, 25–8, 25–18. Setter Skyler Miller returned after missing Thursday’s match due to an injury to lead all scorers with 14 points and seven aces. Payden Kegley added six points with four aces. Elle Peifer scored three points, all of them aces and also took charge closer to the net with three kills. Also scoring for the Bulldogs were Jasmine Davidson (5), Raven James (4), Amani Wagner (3) and DeAunna Cheatom (1).
