Boys soccer racks up 11 goals
The YSHS boys soccer team crushed St. Bernard-Elwood Place in Cincinnati this week, winning by a final score of 11–0 to move to 9–1–1 on the season.
Scoring for the Bulldogs were Ian Chick (4 goals), Hafiz Mensah (2 goals), Aaron Sherwood (2 goals), Nathan Miller, Jared Scarfpin and Grant Reigelsperger.
“Overall we outplayed them, and the team played very well and passed very well,” Coach Ben Van Ausdal said of the victory.
This week the Bulldogs have critical matches against rival Catholic Central, the #4 team in the state, and Dayton Christian, who stands in the way of YSHS winning the Metro Buckeye Conference outright.
Buck Creek yields XC bests
The Yellow Springs High School boys and girls cross-country teams competed at Buck Creek Invitational in Springfield on Saturady. As a team, the boys finished in 13th place out of 18 teams.
Leading the charge was freshman Cameron Haught, who came in 53rd place out of 203 runners in 18:44, a season best. One second later was Connor Gravley-Novello, in 56th place, with a 16-second improvement over his previous season best time.
Levi Brown broke the 20-minute barrier for the first time in a lifetime-best run of 19:57, for 86th place. Carter Collins also ran a lifetime best, finishing in 106th place in 20:29. Josh Seitz completed scoring with his own personal-record time of 20:55, good for 177th place. Oluka Okia was sixth man on the day, finishing 158th overall in 23:15.
In the girls race, Charlotte Walkey ran to 25th place out of a total of 132 runners in a season-best time of 21:49. YSHS runner Tabea Wegers, in her first race for the Lady Bulldogs, was 110th with a 28:46 clocking after a 8:03 first mile. Emma Romohr was 116th in 29:21 — a new lifetime record.
Volleyball team gets revenge
Last week, the YSHS varsity volleyball team faced Xenia Christian for a rematch. After losing the first season’s match against Xenia Christian, YSHS played hard and got the win (25–18, 16–25, 25–17, 25–22).
Kennedy Harshaw led the squad with 16 kills and eight digs. Hannah Brown dished out 16 assists, Kasey Linkhart had 10 digs and Mar’iah Miley made six blocks in the win.
Later in the week, YSHS faced Dayton Christian for the second time. After losing the first time the teams met, Dayton Christian came back more organized and ready to win. They pulled the win over YSHS in three games: 25–15, 25–23, 25–10.
Girls soccer scores on TC
Over the week the YSHS girls soccer team played MBC opponents Xenia Christian and Troy Christian and St. Bernard-Elmwood Place.
The Xenia Christian game begin with a lackluster start but YSHS picked up play in the second half. Forward Ayeshia Allison pressured the Xenia defense and the outside midfielders Rachel Hiatt and Sharde Scott helping to move the ball forward. Erica Ranard played well at defense and Caylen Hall made five saves in her end of game debut in goal.
The Bulldogs regrouped for Thursday’s match against conference leader Troy Christian and were determined to score. TC scored a few early goals. Sweeper Ursula Kremer kept the defense organized. At halftime TC was still ahead and the Lady Bulldogs were still determined. With 15 minutes left Rachel Hiatt put a ball forward for Brianna Ayers who took the ball deep into the TC defense where a foul was called and a penalty kick awarded. Ayers put the ball in the back of the net.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs traveled to St. Bernard-Elmwood Place. Angel Johnson teamed up with Allison to push the ball forward. YSHS had opportunities at goal including a hard shot from midfielder Dani Worsham but the St. Bernard forwards were able to find the back of the net in the second half and YSHS fell to 0–10.
JV volleyball fares first loss
Last Tuesday, the YSHS junior varsity volleyball team traveled to Xenia Christian for a conference game. The JV team went in undefeated and after three close games (25–23, 20–25, 26–24) kept their unblemished record.
In the win, Julie Roberts had 12 points, Mollye Malone added seven points, Amelia Gray had four points, Elizabeth Smith notched seven kills and eight digs and Gracie Wilke had three points and five digs.
Later in the week, the JV squad finally met their match at Dayton Christian, losing their first match of the season 22–25, 17–25.
McKinney XC at Buck Creek
Seventh grader Jude Meekin was the top finisher among all the McKinney cross-county runner at Buck Creek last weekend. Meekin sped through a 6:27 first mile to 13th overall finish for the 2-mile junior high course in 14:06.Ket White was 63rd overall in her first race ever in 16:52. A total of123 girls finished the race.
In the junior high boys race Kaden Boutis had a 5:57 first mile. But he couldn’t hold that pace for the second half of the race and faded to 19th with a final time of 13:20. Alex Rogers was 27th out of the 105 finishers in the field. His final time was a quick 13:42 after a 6:15 first mile.
8th grade Vball now 4–7
The McKinney volleyball team improved their record to 4–7 with back-to-back victories against Meadowdale and Dayton Christian last week. Coach Bubba Worsham said he is beginning to see evidence that what started as a group of athletic individuals is beginning to gel as a cohesive team.
Individually, middle hitters DeAunna Cheatom and Elle Peifer have stepped up their game, he added, playing the net with controlled aggressiveness. They have become a favorite target of setter Skyler Miller and have combined for 41 kills on the season. Raven James, Brielle Willis, and Evalynn Orme have for some time demonstrated a knack for cleanly handling serves and chasing down errant passes, Worsham said. And Elly Kumbusky has begun showing a lot of improvement in this area of late. James, Orme, and Willis are also contributing on the service line, each serving with 90 percent accuracy on the season.
Outside Hitters Amani Wagner and Jasmine Davidson are also beginning to settle into their roles. Finally, newcomer Payden Kegley has found her niche at the opposite hitter position.
