Minor League’s Reds trump Pirates

The 2014 Minor League season kicked off Saturday, June 14, with a decisive 14–5 win by the Sam and Eddie’s Open Books Reds over the Tom’s Market Pirates. The Reds jumped out to an early 2–1 first inning lead and never looked back.
The team added one in the second, three in the third and crossed the plate five times in the fourth on RBI singles by Keldon Harker, Ethan Knemeyer, Joshua Clark and a two-run single by Owen Beitenhaus. The Reds added three more runs in the top of the fifth after base hits by Keldon Harker and each of the Knemeyer brothers. Clark singled, scoring Jason Knemeyer and Harker, which was followed up by Beitenhaus’ RBI single, scoring Ethan Knemeyer. The Knemeyer brothers led the team, both going five-for-five, scoring four runs each with Jason knocking in three runs. Keldon Harker went three-for-five, scored three runs with two RBIs, while Clark went five-for-five, scoring once and netting four RBIs. Joe Freeman and Areah Harker each added one run. The Pirates posted one run in the third on Matt Duncan’s base hit that scored Dyllon VanHoose. They added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth when Duncan smashed a two-run triple, sending brothers Sean and Dyllon VanHoose across the plate. Then Noah VanHoose hit an RBI double, scoring Duncan, who finished the day with the one run scored and four RBIs on as many hits.
Saturday’s second game saw The Wind’s Cafe Indians shut the door early on the Vintage Truck Dragons, capturing a 13–6 victory. The Indians took the lead early with Jake Ortiz-Thornton’s first inning RBI double, scoring Brady Baker and Isaac Grushon. Second inning RBI singles by Henry Smith-Heston, Ava Schell, Aiden Scavone and Luka Sage-Frabotta were followed by an Ortiz-Thornton ground-out RBI, which helped the Indians score a total of seven runs in the first three innings. They added three more in the fourth with a Sage-Frabotta RBI single that scored Lucas Dunn and a two-RBI base hit by Schell. The Indians tacked on another three scores in the fifth when Baker, Grushon and Ortiz-Thornton all crossed the plate. Sage-Frabotta led the way by going four-for-four, two runs scored and four RBIs, followed by Schell’s three-for-four and four RBIs, with Ortiz-Thornton’s three hits in four at bats, three runs scored and three RBIs. The Dragons started strong with a pair of runs in the first when Gage Kostrzewa’s two-RBI single scored Liam McClean and Tallis Onfroy-Curley. They added another run in the third when Onfroy-Curley was again knocked in by a Kostrzewa base hit. The Dragons tried to rally in the fourth by adding three more runs when rookie Christian Warren’s ground out scored Zoe Hamilton. Kian Barker then singled and later scored on a McClean base hit followed by an Onfroy-Curley single that scored Cameron Bruggeman. Onfroy-Curley led the team by going three-for-three, two runs scored and an RBI, followed by Gage Kostrzewa’s pair of hits in three appearances and three RBIs, and Liam McClean’s three hits in as many attempts with a run scored and an RBI.
