Reds B lead the Major League

Despite suffering their first loss of the season, The Winds Cafe Indians’ 4–1 record was good enough to hold on to a slim half-game lead over the Sam and Eddie’s Open Books Reds record of 4–2 halfway through the 2014 season. And it was the Reds, with barely enough players showing up, that handed the Indians their first loss in a blowout fashion, 10–4 Saturday, July 12.
The Indians took an early lead in the top of the first when Isaac Grushon singled and then scored on Henry Smith-Heston’s line drive to center field. Krishan Miller then doubled to right field and both he and Smith-Heston scored on Lucas Dunn’s right field double. After being held scoreless through three, the Reds came alive and never trailed after scoring five runs in the third. Keldan Harker’s double was followed by a Josh Clark base hit and RBI singles from Cal Freeman, Owen Beitenhaus, Joe Freeman, Areya Harker and Jason Knemeyer. The Indians could manage only a single run in the fourth when Grushon scored on a Krishan Miller center field base hit. The Reds piled on five more runs in the bottom of the fourth on base hits from Ethan Knemeyer, Keldan Harker and Josh Clark, followed by RBI singles from Cal Freeman, Beitenhaus, Joe Freeman and both Jason and Ethan Knemeyer.
Saturday’s first game saw the Vintage Truck Dragons outlast the Tom’s Market Pirates, 6–5, for the Dragons’ second victory over the Pirates in a week. The Pirates out-hit the Dragons 14–11, but the Pirates stranded nine runners on base and were unable to overcome a six-run second inning deficit. The Dragons put up three runs in the first after a Christian Bruggeman base hit and RBI singles by Cameron Bruggeman, Gage Kostrzewa and Lucas Price. They added three more in the second to take a 6–0 lead when Tallis Onfroy-Curley, Bruggeman and Kostrzewa all singled and scored on RBI base hits by Price, Zoe Hamilton and Christian Warren. The Pirates responded with three runs of their own in the third on base hits by Otto Cipollini, Malcolm Blunt and Dyllon VanHoose, who all scored on RBI singles from Shawn VanHoose, and siblings Scout and Ben Espinosa. That rally continued but fell short in the fourth with two more runs scored after Emmett Cipollini’s lead-off triple led to him scoring on Blunt’s RBI base hit. Noah VanHoose then singled and scored on brother Shawn’s left field double. Despite having the game’s last at bat, the Pirates couldn’t continue the rally and dropped their overall season record to 1 and 6 while the Dragons win puts them a game and half behind the Indians with a record of 3–3.
The Dragons took their first game from the Pirates earlier in the week in a 15–12 slug fest win on Wednesday, July 9. The two teams combined for 44 hits, including four extra-base hits and six lead changes. The Dragons grabbed the early lead, 2-0 when Cameron Bruggeman singled and then scored on Christian Warren’s two-RBI double to left field that also scored Christian Bruggeman. But the Pirates charged back in the bottom of the first, taking a 6-2 lead after base hits by Justin Nash and Ben Espinosa, who both scored on Dyllon VanHoose’s center field, line drive triple. Noah VanHoose then doubled to left field, scoring brother Dyllon. Sam Linden, Malcom Blunt and Nash all delivered RBI singles, scoring Noah VanHoose, Scout Espinosa and Linden, respectively. The Dragons responded by adding three runs in the top of the second when Christian Bruggeman, Tallis Onfroy-Curley and Zoe Hamilton crossed the plate, while the Pirates added one in their half of the second on Noah VanHoose’s RBI single that scored Ben Espinosa. The Dragons then basically put the game away for good in the third, when all but two of seven batters singled and six more runs went on the board. The Pirates tried to rally, putting up four more runs of their own in the third to tie the game at 11, but the Dragons kept coming, adding two more runs in each of the final two innings to only one more scored by the Pirates. Christian Warren racked up three RBIs for the Dragons on four hits, including a triple. Dyllon VanHoose led the Pirates with three RBIs on two base hits and a double.

The Reds B team continued its win streak this past week and remain atop the Major League standings with a 4–1 record after taking a game from both the Reds A and Reds C teams last week. Their first win came on Wednesday, July 10, with 19-4 domination over the Reds A team. The Reds B jumped out to a 4–0 lead in the first inning, while adding one run in both the second and third innings. They added two more in the fourth and another five in the third to go up 12–3 after Team C put up three runs in the third. The Reds B then capped off the game with a seven-run sixth inning. Ty Thompson and Pete Freeman led the team, each scoring three runs, while Colton Bittner, Dylan Rainey, Liam Hackett Jason Lansing and Albert Glover all scored twice. One run was added by Eamonn Cary, Eric Romohr and Tony Marinelli. Team A’s runs came off the bats of DeAndre Cowen, Parker Bleything and Eli Schell.
The Reds B returned to the field Thursday, July 10, and took a commanding 20-2 victory over the Reds C team. Eamonn Cary, Colton Bittner and Jason Lansing all scored three runs, including a three run first inning home run off Lansing’s bat. Dylan Rainey added a pair of one run homers with Liam Hackett scoring twice after being walked and hit by a pitch and Josaiah Zinger-Mitchell and Tony Marinelli each scoring once in the final inning. Quinn Wilson and Aamil Wagner scored for the Reds C team in the third inning before the game was called on the run rule.
The Reds a finished the week in second place with a 2–1 record followed by the Reds C in third, still winless at 0-4.
Minor League games are played on Saturday mornings at 10 a.m. and at 7 p.m. on Monday and Wednesday evenings at Gaunt Park. Major league games are played Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday evenings at 6 p.m. in Gaunt Park.
