Students from Antioch School’s Younger Group visited the Yellow Springs News office last week to learn a little bit about how a newspaper is made. Designer Matt Minde showed the students a brief video detailing the process (the same video runs regularly as an underwriting promo on ThinkTV), and associate editor Lauren Heaton, designer and photographer Suzanne Szempruch and advertising manager Robert Hasek fielded questions.

The students also learned a bit about the old linotype printing equipment, which continues to be stored in the News’ enigmatic back room. Students learned that making a newspaper was once a grueling and physical experience and that, frankly, the News has it pretty easy these days.

Returning to the Antioch School after their field trip, the Younger Group very kindly drew pictures of their favorite things about the tour and gifted them to the News team. A theme emerged from these drawings, suggesting that the students’ favorite thing about the News is also the News team’s favorite thing about the News: Tucker, the resident “news hound.”
